Metal patio door
« on: August 07, 2004, 08:19:30 PM »

The magnetic window/door switches don't
work on my sliding glass patio door with
metal trim.  Other than using a moton
detector, an ideas?

I had the same problem with my steel garage
door and sliding patio door.  On my garage
door I mounted one sensor to a 5" 1x2
sticking up above the garage door and the
other sensor and the transmitter unit
opposite it on the wall.  On my sliding
patio door I went to my hardware store and
found a 2x2 inch square plastic rod (had to
buy all 3 feet of it for $8).  I used
double backed tape to mount about 3" of the
the block to the door and mounted the wired
sensor on the wall opposite it - I also
found that because of the metal they almost
needed to touch when the door was closed
and the transmitter needed to be as far
away from the door as possible, mine is
above the door, and the curtains, but works
perfectly...it took some trial and error,
but got it done.
