Pre-wired Home and Wireless
« on: December 26, 2004, 01:35:34 AM »

Can anyone recommend a unit for a pre-wired
home?  I would like to use the existing
wired sensors with X10 wireless equipment.
Plus, I would like to have the call-out
feature, so the ActiveHome product line
doesn't look like a good choice.  Any advice
would be much appreciated.

Thanks.... Paul

I adapted the DS7000 Security System with my
previous security system. I took the X10
Door/Window sensor and removed the screws on
the pick up unit and hooked these two wires
to the two wires that looped through all my
doors and windows switches. When all doors
and windows are closed the X10 door/window
sensor will report to the DS7000 and the
light on DS7000 will be out. When the X10
DS7000 is armed and a door or window is
open, the DS7000 will alarm and call the
telephone numbers that you have programed
into it. Hope this helps, James

Thanks James, I followed your advice, and it
worked perfectly.  Of course, the security
company wiring was a spaghetti mess, but
once I discovered the pattern, I was able to
hook the sensors inline.  Now, I have a
hybrid wired/wireless security system :)

If anyone has questions about this, please
post, and I'll do my best to respond.
Reverse-engineering the pre-existing wiring
is a pain, so let me know if I can offer
some tips.

For one thing, if you link two wired zones
to a single wireless sensor, you must use an
inline resister for each wired zone.  These
resisters are easy to aquire, and my
existing box had a ziplock bag full of these
resisters, so I didn't have to purchase
these.  Hopefully, you'll be as lucky as
me.  If you don't use the resisters, only
one wired zone will work, the other will
not.  Took me an hour to figure it out.

Regards.... Paul

If you have an existing hard wired alarm
system that has a dry set of contacts
(closes when alarm activated), you can
remove the screws on an x10 door-window
sensor magnet switch and wire the x10 door-
window sensor into a 12vdc relay closed
contacts. Wire this relay to alarm output on
existing alarm system (relay will turn on
and open contacts on door window sensor when
existing alarm system is activated). You can
then use the DS7000 calling feature to call
your cell phone when alarm is activated. You
will then save the money you pay to a alarm
monitoring service.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was able to
tie in my homes pre-wired security with the
X10 security console. It cost less then
buying a replacement dialer.
