X10 and Kids who sneak out
« on: July 23, 2005, 10:47:30 PM »

My 13 and 15 year old have just learned the
art of sneaking out of the house after we
go to bed.  They are on the 2nd floor, we
are on the first.  Does X10 have a product
to help me keep the kids in?  Can the
sensors on the windows (in this case)
outsmart the kids and not tinkered with so
as not to work?  (i.e. - Taking the
batteries out of them, etc)?

Thanks!

I believe taking the batteries out of the
door/window sensor when the system is armed
will trigger the system.  Try testing this
when the system is armed.
If the above workes then the only other way
to "beat" the system is to carefully remove
te magnetic contact from the window (making
sure it stays in range of the other without
triggering the system) and taping it to the
other contact so you can open the window.
Super strong glue usually cures this
problem.

All you need to do is wrap a thin bare wire
between the two terminals on the sensor and
it is defeated.

If you are trying to keep your kids in, why
not put the sensors on the outside of the
window? :-)

You need to be more realistic! If my kid
would be walking out at nitgh!
Well no television, no gaming for a week
and a nail on the window!

If you want to know when they do it you
could make a modification to a window
sensor by replacing the contact sensor for
a real alarm system door sensor. They are
made in two parts one magnet in the window
wooden frame and the contact in the frame
then run the wire of the contact in the
detector. (Obviousely you will loose the
warranty by openning the sensor and some
soldering is needed)I would use a 4 or 6
braid phone wire that two wire go to the
sensor and the other is to the kid to
figure out why they are there!

system... and a way to take the car too. you
shouldnt bother.

Putting it on the outside is a good idea.
Getting a key lock for the window would also
be good but would be deadly in the case of a
fire.
