TCP/IP Ethernet for PC to CM15A
« on: April 07, 2005, 12:54:23 PM »

X10 Pro:  Since the AHP Video Plug-in
precludes an untethered the CM15A from the
USB port and requires that AHP be active on
the PC receiving the Video Feed, then why
not change or add an Ethernet (RJ45
connection) using TCP/IP for the CM15A to
interface with a computer.  This would
permit the original flexibility in locating
the CM15A away from the PC and not be
dependent on its operation (untethered to
the PC via USB as originally advertised).
Because Ethernet supports wire and wireless
(802.11G) the configuration and
communication flexibility possibilities
greatly expand.  Consider being able to
select any PC on the network to manage and
run AHP from.

ALSO less USB burden in a PC and much more
flexibility in PC(s) configuration as well.
This opens up the world of X10 Cameras
combined with Ethernet for powerful
flexibility in range, wire/wireless
application, and integration into existing
environments.  Plus the option of supporting
camera control of Ethernet cameras
(Compatibility – a market advantage to
integrate/adapt to existing installations).
The flexibility of defining the source of
video input to an application is already in
windows XP so it is just a matter of using
that available capability.  The potential is
very exciting, especially since home
installation of Ethernet and DSL is
skyrocketing.

I totally agree!!!!  I think it should have
the option of both 100base-T and 802.11.

Hey Guys: Everstop to think that the CM15A
DOES have a TCP/IP connection ......

IT'S CALLED YOUR COMPUTER - EVERY BODIES
COMPUTER THAT CONNECTS TO THE INTERNET HAS
IT.
Why should X10 develope something that
already exists - give it a rest. X10 won't
do anything like that - they already have
difficulties dealing with what they already
have - how do you think they will deal with
something that is more complicated.

Donald:  LOL.  I will let you explain to my
wife why we have to have a computer taped
to the wall beside my CM15a. ;)  Seriously
though, a PC is overkill to act as a USB to
Ethernet Bridge.

BTW.  I saw a website for a similar bridge
for the CM11a about a year ago.

Ethernet would be a way of locating the
CM15A anywhere there is an Ethernet port
(wire or wireless) available.  It would
provide a high speed communication and data
transfer link far beyond the range of even a
signal boosted USB and without any of the
timing and latency problems.  Not to mention
use of existing facilities to access through
the internet.
Donald:  The last time I checked the CM15A
could not talk over Ethernet to anything.
Nor could anything talk to CM15A via
Ethernet.

Hey Guys
Don't get too far ahead of the X10
development curve. The X11 is on the drawing
board :-)

Clarity:  Just trying to get X10 to join the
world of standard communications rather than
re-inventing the wheel. Using existing,
available communications & digital transfer
of information is prudent, time saving, cost
effective and not a difficult concept to
grasp.  We are just trying to keep that
vision "on the table". . . Nothing new or
advanced here, just trying to get a solid
platform to work from.
