X10 filter PZZ01not effective
« on: February 06, 2006, 03:17:05 PM »

The power company that serves the area in
which we do business is in the process of
installing electric meters for automatic
reading from their central station.  This
change is messing up our security
installations where we use X10 outlet
modules (SR227),  powerflash interfaces
(PF284),  chimes (SC546A), etc..  We have
tried using the filter (PZZ01),  it is not
effective.   I think they may be using
pulses on their carrier and not RF bursts
at the 60Hz zero crossing as does X10.
Therefore, the filter (PZZ01)  is not
effective.  All of the people I have been
able to talk to about this at the power
company don’t know what they have since an
outside vendor installed the AMR’s.  I’m
not an electrical engineer and am at a loss
as to how to combat this problem.  I’m
hoping someone out there has experienced
this problem and found a solution they are
willing to pass on to us.

When you say "messing up" what do you mean?
Is it falsing? if so, I would think a diode
would do the trick to block the power
company... but thats just a guess not
knowing the symptoms.

Colorado Springs Utilities is also starting
AMR, but their system uses wireless
technology - I heard they are having issues
with battery theft. Their FAQ lists opering
in unlicensed band of 902-928Mhz with less
than one watt transmit power.  I would
think the power company should be excellent
source of info.

Wayne, the PZZ01 is not a noise filter.  It is a signal blocker.  It is designed to reduce the signal strength of incoming and outgoing X10 signals by a ratio of 30:1.  Thus preventing your neighbors from turning on your lights inadvertantly.  Have you determined if you are losing signal or if your signals are being corrupted?  You might be better off using an XPCR in increase your signal strength if the former is the issue.  If it is the latter, an XPCR MIGHT help if the noise issue isn't too great.
