exactly what is the difference between the two? it looks like its just the dome.

Tuicemen

Basically that is all that is different!
And one is indoor the other outdoor, the sentinel being for outdoor. ;)

The outdoor (Sentinel) I think has a more restricted pan and tilt sweep because of the dome.

so if i put a vangaurd in a good dome it would be a little better than (more pan tilt) a sentinel?

It depends on the climate. The sentinel may have a lower operating temp.

Yes you will get slighly more tilt (more ability to look down). I think .. the pan will remain the same. Ether way BOTH the Vangaurd and the Sentinel are awesome cameras!

My Vanguard is outside, upside down in a plastic tinted dome under the soffit overhang.
It so far has worked fine in sub zero winter and super hot summer.

FYI

Please see my Sentinel review for the differences between it and the VK77A

http://www.x10community.com/forums/index.php?topic=10700.0

Also, after gaining extensive internal knowledge of the VK77A/CX21B (don't ask!), The one thing they did do right, was use extremely flexible wiring for all connections between the base and the PTZ components. I live in the Pacific Northwest and use these outside, under my soffetts, w/o any issues other than insects clinging to the lens!
(quite interesting to open the viewer and see a mosquito hawk full screen. :o ) Kinda reminds me of those old monster movies from the 50's.

The biggest problem I've come across, is that one of the VK77A's quit responding to the remote control, and I have been unable to fix it..
