Is the PH508 Siren supposed to work intermittently or is it supposed to sound continuously? My 2 units screech for a few seconds, then turn off for a few seconds then screech again, etc.. Is this how this device is supposed to work?

The PH508 needs a continuous cycle of X10 Line Signals to trigger.
It take about 2 or 3 cycles to trigger it and it will continue to sound for 4 minutes IF the cycles are still being sent or for about 15 seconds after the cycles stop.

There a a few set of cycles that work.
An On/Off cycle for the House Unit Code address it is set to.
An All Lights On/All lights Off cycle on the House Code it is set to.
An All Lights On/All Units Off cycle on the House Code it is set to.

So a PH508 on B1 could be triggered by a stream of B1 On; B1 Off cycles. A set of B All Lights On; B All Lights Off or B All Lights On B All Units Off.

You can test how it works with a X10 controller or remote by sending On; Off commands at about 1 second intervals on the Address it is set to.

What are you trying to sound it with? If it is a Radio Shack 49-1000 Security Console; there is a know problem in getting the PH508 to work.
Basically the symptoms you describe is how it may work with the RS Console.

A Honeywell LYNXR-EN Console. The only Device Action available is continuous 1 second on - 1 second off and that's what I use. The result is as I described.

One on one off should be the choice. Is there a gap between the on off or is more than one address sent. Like A1 and A2 cycles?
If you have a way to send an on off cycle like a remote or local controller. You can test the PH508 by sending manually the on off cycle signals. You may want to try a different outlet for the PH508 as a test to see if the X10 signal is having trouble getting to the original outlet as a test.

Thanks - again. The problem is indeed that with this Honeywell system you cannot use 2 PH508s because of the resultant pause that occurs and you can only use 1 House ID with all X-10 devices. I also have a 119db main siren (non-X10) which operates independently, so using only 1 PH508 as a supplement is not a problem. If I find I can't do without a 3rd noise maker, I could of course find a 110v AC siren or a 6-12VDC one connected to an AC converter and control that with the AM466 Appliance module.

You can have 2 on the same address if that helps you out. If not at least you found the problem.
