In the past year I had continuous crashes with AHP, some posts and an offer from X10 Pro to try to resolve. I put the problems on the back burner, on the off chance it was something in my PC's configuration that might be to blame.

Well, with a brand new Desktop and little added software, voila problems again & same ones.

Tools Preferences use Holidays in Timers <EDIT> Active Home Professional has encountered a problem and needs to close

Hardware interface Configuration <Unclick Show US & Canada Only>Active Home Professional has encountered a problem and needs to close

Hardware interface Configuration Trying to pull down location Shows only custom

XP service Pack 2 no antivirus/firewalls at the (but it doesn't matter) 768mb Memory AMD SEMPRON 3300
Tried compatability modes, de-install reinstall

It would be nice to have this work.

After installing AHP did you update before you tested the crashes? ??? These were known issues in older versions but should be fixed if you have the latest update!
If you've installed the updates and still have the crashes explore returning for an exchange ask for a diagnostic unit and the diagnostic software if you have the same problems with it it will help pinpoint them. ;)

I had very similar issues. The AHP crashed the PC within minutes. I replaced the video-USB interface and that resolved my problems. The applications now runs 24x7 several days in a row.

Am not using any Camera's, it is only controlling lights and appliances & will only crash when trying to access the functions/change preferences mentioned. Except for the very odd occasion when it gets possessed and there's mega activity on the 'line' the thing works ok. I purchased the AHP shortly after introduced and for some reason, the problem follows me around, 3 different PCs and 1 laptop [2 XP PRO & 2 XP HOME], 'Onliest' thing that is common are all my processors are AMD.

gkwhite: There were problems with some of the early builds of the CM15A perhaps you have one!
Also since you say
QuoteExcept for the very odd occasion when it gets possessed and there's mega activity on the 'line' the thing works ok.
there is a good chance that you have line noise which is flooding the CM15A I noticed this with my original unit as well and disabled those house code as transceiver that fixed the problem my new diagnostic unit(not new now) doesn't show all the line activity that my first CM15A did! if you do a search on here for bad CM15A's you should find the code for the bad ones . my diagnostic Has 05B06 on the round sticker on the back of the unit (can't remember what my original was but I know I posted its number on the board here! you'll have to dig deep into old posts to find it!
The more info you post the more I think you need to request a replacement.  :o(hope you got the extended warranty!) ;) ???

Didn't have extended warranty. Bought another module, came today. This will be it's last chance. Fresh install with new AHP module, if the same thing happens, you'll see them all on ebay. I'll go back to the old serial port version.

If your new PC is running WindowsXP (any "flavor") if AH and the CM11A Serial interface have problems communicating, then you have to go to either AHP or some other (Smarthome) control program to run X10.

You may or may not have any problems, so good luck.

Did you read the last line in gkwhite's post?   Here it it is: "I'll go back to the old serial port version."

That's why my response was worded as it is. A caution as it it pretty well known around here that people have had problems with COM ports in XP.  It's a "hit or miss" if XP will have COM problems or not.

It seems like when I'm using RF commands (motion sensors in my case) I too get the dreaded  "AHP has encountered a problem and needs to close."  This never happens when I'm using AHP for timers.  The referenced file is always the "ahp.dll" file.  I wish the X10 Pro would comment on these crashes.  I would be willing to help "debug" this problem.  It's very disgusting to continually put up with this problem.  I'm sure it can easily be fixed with the right amount of testing and I'm willing to help do that, as I'm sure other folks would be willing too.  Comments X10 Pro?

Dan Lawrence

What version of ahp.dll are you using and where is it located?  Mine is in C:\Program Files\Active Home Pro and is listed as 7,458,816 and is dated 7/3/2006, which means it came with the 3.204 upgrade to AHP.

Good question Dan.  My ahp.dll file is located the same as yours "in C:\Program Files\Active Home Pro and is listed as 7,458,816 and is dated 7/3/2006, which means it came with the 3.204 upgrade to AHP."

Thanks for all your suggestions esp that the CM15A might be the culprit, had always assumed the software; but Ebay will have to wait awhile. With the new CM15A, the previously mentioned problems do not appear. Tempted to plug in the old CM15A and see what happens, one day maybe, but today I'll just configure and setup with the new one.

Dan Lawrence

Good.

One thing. If you create everything in AHP with the new CM15A, and if you decide to try your old CM15A, BACKUP all your .ahx files in the C:\Program Files\Active Home Pro folder to either another drive on your PC or external backup media, as insurance if AHP crashes with the old CM15A.  It's also a good idea to backup after any changes you  make.

My X10 system is the same as yours, modules and simple interface based macros.  No plug-ins.
