Ok.

So what is: Tracing route to ftp.x10.com [63.211.210.21] aka software.x10.com

trying to do *WITHOUT* asking me first?

ZoneAlarm blocked traffic to port 2560 on your machine from port 21 on a remote computer whose IP address is 63.211.210.21. This communication attempt may have been a port scan, or simply one of the millions of unsolicited commercial or network control messages that are routinely sent out over the Internet. Such unsolicited messages are often called Internet background noise.

Interesting. I will have to see if anything is in my ZoneAlarm logs.
I also know by default, I can't do much on the X10 sales site without telling SpywareBlaster X10.com is an OK site. ::)

Yesterday it worked.
Today it doesn't work.
X10 on Windows is like that.

What does that mean???

OK, I never heard that term before.

For anything related to X10 (and most everything else under Win XP), my Zone Alarm Personal is set to ask me first.  AHP always wants to access that same server IP you mention when it starts - I think to check for available updates.  The ZA logs don't show any incoming probes from that IP.   Maybe registration has something to do with it.
