Title: SR731 RF repeater?
Post by: Tuicemen on April 24, 2014, 10:49:24 AM
X10 is debating bringing this back.
However they don't currently have tooling for it so this would most likely be a totally new module.
I never had one of these units so I'd like to hear from anyone that has or had one.
Maybe a new version could have better specs then the original units.
most users needing this device have gone with a WGL unit (http://www.wgldesigns.com/w800.html)

I have one. I didn't find mine to be particularly useful. It sits in my big plastic tub of spare X10 parts.

I wonder if an antenna mod would improve the performance.
As a suggestion maybe if this is brought back have a screw in antenna similar to that on IP cameras and routers.
This would allow users to add a longer antenna or different wired one at a higher location then what normally would be possible.

X10-WTI appeared to sell transceivers with inadequate range in order to justify selling an RF repeater to fix the inadequate range problem. One would hope Authinx would rather improve the antennas on the transceivers thus eliminating any need for a repeater.

I've made the suggestion that new modules get a replaceable screw in antenna similar to IP cameras.
This should help any one with range issues be able to swap out to a better antenna. Who knows if that's what will happen! ::) :'
Apparently the new X10 has decided to go ahead with a new RF repeater.
Engineers I'm told already have a working proto type which has a range of 150 feet.
However they have been told to try and push that range even further.

I hope they will handle the string of dim or bright commands used for the older dimmer type modules.
I vaguely remember the old ones had problems with them. Also not 100% sure the older ones handles the new Extended X10 Messages correctly.

I'll pass that info along they're always interested in hearing of ways to improve modules.

I just got some info on this from the owner.

we are very close to approving the new repeater module. The unit will be in a standard appliance module form factor and so far the functionality is quite impressive. I know anyone with RF range issues, specially the security unit users will greatly benefit from this. This unit surpasses the quality of the previous repeater (SR731).

Also word is a new security console is in the works with GSM however launch date is still undetermined.

Given FCC limits on transmit power at 310MHz, 150' range is highly improbable unless most of the improvement comes on the receiver side of the repeater.

It would appear that the new X10 shares the same design philosophy as the old X10.

I don't have any specs on this as yet nor have I seen one to examine.

Several modules are slated to be revamped with better PLC reliability. Until we see a new RF device like this one it is unsure of the design philosophy.
I also don't expect to see any revamped modules while there is still a warehouse full of old ones.
Maybe this unit will become obsolete once improved units start to make their way into the market place. ::) :'

The word is the new model number for this is SR751
There should be a small supply of these available next month(OCT. 2014) if not sooner.

I missed this earlier but it may explain a lot.  :'

I, too, have a large box full of spare X-10 parts but I never sits in it.  rofl
