XPT >> XP2D >> XPDF
« on: October 29, 2007, 11:19:33 PM »

I'm trying to control a light fixture that I can dim using The XPT+XP2D and with the XPDF at the light fixture.  I've got it all set up per the instructions.

But its not working at all.  I think the keypad is a newer version and the XPT base is an older version.  The XPT base does NOT have an 'A' on it and the keypad DOES have an 'A' on the back of it.

The round sticker on the keypad is - '07E22'

The round sticker on the XPT base is - '06J43'

Are they incompatible or is my problem something else?

Thanks a lot!

dillscon,

Welcome to the forum.

While your keypad and base units are separated by one year in their manufacture dates ( '06 and '07 ), I'm not aware of any recent changes to either of these units.  That doesn't mean a whole lot.  We find out about module revisions when someone like you has a problem.  Maybe another forum member can chime in here.

I was also under the impression that the XP2D keypad was just a dumb contact switch - not much to go wrong there.

Assuming you do not have an incompatibility in the XPT, you'll need to separate the variables (XPT and XPDF) and troubleshoot them individually.

  • If you have a lamp module (or something similar) set it to the XPT house/address code and plug it into the same line (or at least powerline phase) as the XPT.
  • If you have a transceiver or PC interface, try activating your XPDF using this device.

Bottom line is, we need to determine whether you have a device problem or a signal problem.  Either way, we'll need a bit more info to proceed.

Have a look at Tuicemens' stickey:: X10 Issues? Please Read This First!

It's a bit daunting, but there's a lot of good info there.

I'm using the XPDF direct wire receiver.  They are both on the same phase, I did verify that.  I actually have 2 sets of the base and the keypad and I tried both just to make sure that it wasnt just faulty.

I should have posted this before but this is where I got the information on them being incompatable.

I just wanted to make sure that I was reading that correctly.  I'm an electrician and this is my first time ever messing with X-10.  In the mean time i'll check out the trouble shooting link you gave me.

Thanks a lot for the help!

dillscon,

Thank you for the link!  It looks like I'm the one learning here.

I'm probably not telling you anything you haven't already figured out but, based on the link you provided, you XPT base and XP2D keypad do indeed look like they are incompatible (180 degree reversal from my previous post - gotta love it).

From the date codes you provided:

  • Your XPT base (date code 06J43) was manufactured 10/06 (J= month - 10, 06 = year, 43 = week)
  • You Keypad (date code 07E22) was manufactured 5/07 (E= Month = 5, 07 = year, 22 = week)

The manufacture date of your keypad is after the 07A05 date code in the link you provided for the new version ("A") cut in (January '07).  In addition, your description of the "A" revision on the keypad matches the new configuration described in the link.

Sorry - it looks like you were correct.  These units appear to be incompatible.

Other forum members have had success in calling X10 and having units replaced with "old stock".  I don't know of anyone who has tried this with X10Pro devices (hasn't come up).  It would obviously be easier to replace the keypad with an "old" version.

On the other hand, it you replace the base with a newer design you'll have far better access to replacement parts (or upgrades to different keypads) in the future.

Thanks for informing us of this issue.  Let me know if there is anything else you can teach me!.

Well this is my first time installing something thats X-10 so I just wanted to make sure that these two things were indeed incompatable.  I bout the supplies on ebay because it was much cheaper than ordering directly from X10.  Plus X10 hadnt shipped my order even a week after I made the order so I had to find somewhere else to get it.

I just hope this supplier on ebay has an inventory sufficient enough to take care of this.  Thanks for the explanation of the date sticker too.  That was french to me before.
