piece of junk
« on: March 26, 2005, 10:45:11 AM »

I have been using X10 products for
approximately 5 or more years now. These
products are built by another company and
also handled by companies such as Lowes and
Radio Shack. These products are probably the
most worthless piece of junk I have ever
worked with!!! The parts are always failing
for no apparent reason. Every person I have
talked with that has bought these products
have had problems outside the normal
problems. I have had VCR commanders
replaced, sensors replaced, cameras replaced
and all this was just my personal products,
not friends that I have help sell these
product to (Yes, they now look down on me).
I am a 12 year journeyman electrician and
have dealt with communications for years and
security systems so I know bad product
design when i deal with it. What is even
worse is when their tech. support line
figures out that you know what your talking
about and they then decide that they have to
get off the line now and you received the
instruction sheet and YOU CAN HANDLE IT !!!!.
They are soooo right, I am going to handle
all of the products with their name on it
one more time, while Im headed to the
curbside garbage and put it in its correct
place. They should issue a recall on every
product they have sold because this is
apparently a scam as well as their tech
support help line.

I usually modify most X10 items and have
good results. If you want to sell any of the
item write me at: jiminirex@yahoo.com

I must be very lucky or just have gotten a
good batch of X10 products. I have been
using the X10 stuff for years now. There is
an occasional glitch to deal with, but
overall everything has been OK. My
background is in electronics, and I have
been doing my own modifications to the
system, to fit my owm needs. But the basic
system seems to work well for me. My home
entertainment system is setup with the X10
and working well. I never really had to deal
with the tech support line. So I don't know
how responsive they are.

20 years ago, I bought my first x10 kit.  2 lamp modules,
1 wall switch, and a mini controller.  Then when I was sure
the system worked, I purchased a timer.
As time went on, I continued expanding , a little at a time,
always making sure the system remained reliable.
It's now 20 years I've been using the X10 system.
I've got about 10 wall switches, 4 wall jacks, 4 lamp
modules, an appliance module, an additional mini-
controller, the sundowner controller, the security system,
3 cameras, vcr controller, 3 motion sensors, a repeater, a
pyramid remote control extender, several transceivers,
and am now configuring my G4 IMac computer to
interface with the X-10 system, with the intention of
monitoring and controlling my house, from anywhere I'm
able to connect my laptop to the internet.   So far it's
giving me very positive results.
I've had one instance when I dealt with Tech Support.
While discussing the problem, with the tech, he realized
that I knew about electricity and electronics, and adapted
his interaction with me.  We quickly arrived at the
conclusion, that indeed the companion wall switch was
defective.  A few days later I received a new one.
Oh, by the way, I still have and use, the first mini-
controller, all yellow with age, the timer, with a broken
control door, and one of the brown lamp modules, ( the
other one failed) as well as the old wall switch...all still in
use, thank-you.

X10 isn't perfect, and G. Smith sounds like
he knows his craft, but I'm hooked. Check
this out: Combine a Sima automatic video
switcher with an Anaconda, an eagle eye,
tranceiver, dual motion monitor flood
lights, chime and socket rocket and your TV
program will be pre-empted by a color and
sound live showing of who's lurking about.
The socket rocket is used with your normal
porch light (try a CLEAR unfrosted bulb).
The Anaconda works fine at night IF you put
a little care into camera/light location.
The reliability is so good an errant
squirrel can trip it. It's not the ultimate
system but X10'ers: Explore other MFG's for
products to enhance x10 (Sima for example).
One last thing: repeaters should be
mandatory in anything other than an
apartment - they really help.

After seraching the web for the past week
and going to every possible x10 site I have
come to the following conclusions. 1)
Regular x10 products appear to be sample
tested at 1% or 1 out every 100 items
shipped is tested for proper operation. 2)
x10pro products look the same except for an
upgraded console and supposedly they are
tested 100% before shipping. 3) Most sites
that provide tech support or FAQ suggest
that an average home should use anywhere
from 3 to 5 "filterlinc noise filters". 4)
ac chargers for cell phones, PC surge
protectors, refrigerators, basically
anything with a motor or transformer (dryer,
treadmill, vacuum cleaner, big screen TVs
will drain x10 signal power from your house.
The noise filter supposedly rectifies the
problem. go to

Although I've been very hard on x10 for
there quality or lack there of I guess most
of the stuff works but a lot doesn’t for
example bought a bunk of eagle eye motion
detectors about a year ago on sale and half
of them now flash the green programming
light when you walk by and don't send a
signal these things could be a life saver
alerting you someone is outside your house
and might be attempting to break in had one
save my car from being stolen, but you just
can't depend on them. Also had to send the
vcr commanders back 5 times still haven't
received two that work! these thing won’t
even learn the motion detector codes. Some
of there products are great concepts but of
poor quality and construction, plus I really
don't think x10 cares that’s the sad part. I
really believe with strict quality control
standards and updated products like L.E.D’s
on some of their cameras for 0 lux viewing
they could be a billion dollars company. X10
are you listening???? Your survival in the
market place might depend on it. How many
good customers like Mr. Smith can you afford
to lose? I've also stopped recommending some
of your products to friends because of the
poor quality!!
