I thought the boosterlinc's were passive, as in they just take the signal as it passes through and amplifies it...

The SignaLinc is a passive coupler.  While I don't have one myself, I understand the "Booster"Linc is an active device.

I have not tried a BoosterLinc as I have a mixed Insteon and X10 system.
Smarthome said early BoosterLincs messed up Insteon signals. I think it saw part of the Insteon Message and thought it was an X10 one.
Smarthome said later ones are Insteon friendly, but field reports show something different.
