AHP activation with Hughes.net/direcway
« on: November 11, 2006, 10:42:05 AM »

I just bought AHP and can't get it to register. I have trouble getting to the ports 8080 and 8888. No firewalls in the way. Direct connection to the Modem/router (dw7000) Hughes support says they and the router do not block any ports. I tried three different PC all with windows Firewall turned off and mcafee or zone alarm firewall turned off.  X10 sent me a test link and it can not talk to the ports.

I just need it for activation. I have no plans to use the other web products. Can I dial into their server? Can I get a activated version of the software?

Any ideas.

I have been emailing and talking to Hughes and X10 and getting nowhere.

I'm using windows XP. I also went in to systems services and shut down Window fire wall and X10. Nothing helps.

" Can I dial into their server? "

Easy answer, (not much thought)

If you have a dial up connection, just connect, start AHP and register.

I still have a FREE NetZero account for dial up backup.

And yes I have sucessfully registed on dialup (may have to restart, reboot, try several times etc.)

Per my recollection, the way it usually works is that after you've purchased ActiveHome Pro, X-10 sends you an email with the registration code and a URL.  Pulling up that URL gives you 30 minutes to download an installer stub.  When you run the installer stub it downloads and installs the actual AHP software.  When you run AHP the first time it asks you for the registration code.
If you don't download the installer stub within the allotted 30 minutes, you have to go back to X-10 and ask for a new URL.

How far have you gotten in the process?  What web browser are you using?

Yesterday it worked.
Today it doesn't work.
X10 on Windows is like that.

I got as far as downloading the software. I'm using IE7 but I'm not sure it matters since AHP makes it's own connection. I check and see if any of my friends still have a dial in connection.

The net zero idea was good. it was free and the X10 connection utility said all was good. AHP however could not verify. It was one step forward after days of troubleshooting but I still can't use it.

It took me several times to register.

I closed the program, started it again, put in the numbers from the email (network=myhouse/video =iwitness),then tried again.

Repeat as needed. Wait a while, repeat.

I'm assuming you are just trying to REGISTER to programs and that you are not trying to log into myhouse online.

Yes just trying to register, Active home pro. I have used three PCs, two ISPs (Hughes and NetZero). Checked for ad/spyware using Mcafee and Ad-ad-aware. shut down all firewalls and virus scans.  I used the invoice number with a -1. keyed it many times. (I'm told cut and paste is a bad thing)

X10 web test link only says all is good if I use netZero. Hughes says they block no ports at all and the dw7000 also does not block ports.  My best guess is X10 does not like that Hughes does not have a static IP address. The public and private IP's are different.

I have tried it many times but I'm stuck at this point. X10 support is closed on the weekend. So I'll try on Monday.

Do you know how to escalate? I keep getting "canned" solutions they all say the same thing.

I'm not asking for much I just want to turn on what I paid for. I have no plans ever to use the web with x10. I have no need for it or cameras.

Any Ideas are welcomed.

Rob K.

Can you be more specific regarding the error messages you are receiving when trying to register via Sat. and Dialup? Are you getting the same message?

Also, it is possible that the registration # you are using hasn't been registered properly with the server for some reason. Ask for a new # from X10.

The public and private IP's are supposed to be different! The only problem I've ever seen regarding Satellite Internet, was specifically a timing issue with some security protocols. (typically VPN and database applications)

Is this the test link they sent you?  http://www.x10.com/support/netinfo/netinfo_entry.htm

If it is, then you can disregard the results of this test. I was unable to pass this test, but had NO problems registering AHP, iWitness, SmartMacros, and MyHouse.
This test was originally designed for Webview and PanTiltPro, which use different protocols. My understanding is that AHP only uses port 80 for ALL communications to X10.

I also went in to systems services and shut down Window fire wall and X10.

Shutting down services is not recommended, as they typically don't shutdown gracefully. You're better off just disabling the Windows firewall in the Control Panel.

Also, why did you shutdown the X10 service?

The error message I'm getting is: Could not retrieve registration from server

You can get an invalid message but I have only got 'Could not retrieve registration from server"

Shutting down the services was just a desperate attempt to get it working. I shut down x10 because support said it could interfear with the web test link. Yes ,that was the one I was using.

It think I has done everything short of swinging a chichen over my head. I did everything support asked more than once.

Here is what I have ruled out so far:

ISP - Used Hughes.net (satellite) and Net Zero.

Ports - Hughes connection does not block anything. Net Zero passes you Web test.

Firewall - I shut down all firewall/ virus software. I also went into XP system manager at stopped X10 services and Window ICS/firewall. I'm on SP2 and have had the firewall turned off.

Operator error
- I keyed the number they give me with the -1 many times with the same error. I was told not to cut a paste.

Ad/Spyware or  virus - I have ran both MacAfee and ad-aware.

PC - I have used three PC's. Two running MacAfee and one running Zone alarm. I did turn them both off and it still did not work.

AHP software - I downloaded it twice. Same result.

Full Moon – That was last week but right now, it is looking like the best reason for my problem.

Rob,  Try booting up in "Safe Mode w/ Networking" mode. Then run AHP. (If you will get a message about not finding the VA11A usb adapter, just click OK). See if you can register.

I'm not sure this will make any difference, but it may eliminate and issues with most 3rd party driver conflicts. (I was able to make a connection to the MyHouse server running under these conditions)

"I keyed the number they give me with the -1 many times with the same error"

Well I can say for my recent order the number for AHP was NOT the order number -1, it was the order number-4. X!0 sends several emails after the order, some of which could be easily recognized as spam.

The one w/ the numbers was called "software registration" or something like that. And since I had 4 moudules (AHP, iwitness, smart macros and MyHouse) there were 4 different numbers - not in any logical order -1,-2,-3,-4.

GLT

P.S. And when tech support gave me a number it didn't have a - anything, and worked.

I should of added safe mode w networking to my list of things I tried. It would not bring AHP up. It get an X10 interface error and all you get to do is click OK.

After the last post I keyed the numner with -1,-2,-3 and -4. It did not help but was woth a try.

Did you try both Direcway and dialup?

I try ed both many times. X10 came back and said "Satellite won`t work; the latency is too high"

Just for fun and because I ran out of ideas. Thought I would try it on my other computers. Both had failed X10 web connection link they had sent me. I try ed dial up and satelite but both failed.

I was able to install AHP on both without a problem. Using satelite connection wilth the firewall up.

I can't get it to work on the computer I want it on but it is progress. I now know it is not firewall/virus software or my connection.  Now I think it is one of two things:

On the one that does not work:

I'm running IE7 - other two IE6 - I set my default to firefox but AHP used IE.

This computer had the old active Home on it for years and had a version of AHP from a week ago. I uninstalled everything rebooted, Install the new AHP and rebooted again. Anyone know how to clean the reg of X10 stuff?

Not working but here is what I got now:

During the install is says it will shut down X10 jobs running. (there should not be any) I did not get the message on the other computers.
When I bring AHP and key the REG number I get the same old "can't retrieve" error.
If I wait a few seconds and not key the number I get an IE error and it exists. The error occurs when X10 normally pops up the "smart plug in" ad. I never see the ad but I know the timing from the other installs.  I don't have pop up blocker setup in IE7 but I do have a goggle toolbar that is blocking popups. The other two computers do not have that.

That is where I am so far.
