Have You Ever Received a PM *BEFORE* Getting DINGed With an "Unhelpful"?

Yes
No

TakeTheActive

I just don't understand this Anonymous SNIPING - exactly *WHAT* is it supposed to accomplish? ???

I (?foolishly?) keep investing TONs of hours, trying to make this forum a PLEASANT / FUN /INTERESTING place to visit:

Quote:

From my perspective, this "Community" should be a place where:

  • KNOWLEDGE is freely shared (and ACCURATE! :o )
    .
  • EVERYONE can "Feel at ease " and get to know one another  :-*
  • EVERYONE demonstrates the proper manners (i.e. This SNIPING via the "Unhelpfuls" *HAS* to STOP!  >:( )
  • LAUGHTER is not only allowed but ENCOURAGED!  :D
    .
  • Everybody Knows Your Name...  ;D

IMHO, these forums were pretty "STERILE " before I arrived. :o

Yet I still get DINGs :-\.
Just got #52 tonight!
Without an accompanying PM or Post, I have absolutely NO CLUE as to what the SNIPER is upset about. ???
[CLICK HERE to read my latest SOAPBOX SPIEL.  (Read 1075 times)]

I've also recently noticed that there are SEVERAL other 'Helpful' VOLUNTEERS getting the occasional DING.

Why?
:( :( :( :( :( :(
Create a FAKE ID and either PM or E-Mail me with your reasoning - I'm *VERY* curious.

I real can't understand why the Unhelpfuls is needed anyways!

If the average user can't see what was found unhelpful with someones posts!

To those who wish to vote with an unhelpful:

*Please Private Message the recipient and explain why!*

This won't stop your unhelpful vote unless you wait for a responce

At least it gives the user an Idea why and could prevent more unwanted unhelpfuls!

Since the karma plug-in is here to stay lets make it work to help us All!

Anyone that takes the time to respond to a thread with a suggestion or links to get one started doesn't deserve a unhelpful!

If on the other hand if someone only tells others completely useless info like "Stop your Complaining"
then I can see it but at least PM them and give them time to edit their post! ;)

Note:
X10 stated "they know who is voting and how many times and has stated that repeat offenders will be dealt with!"
Take that how you wish! ;)

My take on PM vs no PM:
In general, more people will participate when they know something is anonymous.   It talks out the need to worry about offending people personally and they knowing who you are.

About Unhelpfuls:
In it's current form, I think it's pretty useless because there's no way to link the unhelpful(s) to the post unless you do get a PM.  The forum links the unhelpful mark to the person.   Not only does it lower posting moral, but it serve no point as it does not identify the post that triggers the mark.   Nobody learns or gains anything from unhelpful(s) the way it is designed.

Most of us here, even those of us with a high helpful/unhelpful ratio, agree. Yet no attempt, to my knowledge, has been done to improve the situation.

After being on many boards and admin on a few I can see where helpful / unhelpful is a good thing but I do agree you need to be able to link to the post from witch the post came from. Also I donââ,¬â,,¢t think any unregistered users or noobs should NOT be able to give a post helpful or unhelpful. Set a minim number of post before any one can rate a member or post. I do listen a little more to users with a higher rating. I would consider about forcing registration before posting, I always do due to itââ,¬â,,¢s the polite thing to do.

I got an "unhelpful" Anonymous DING last week too. >:(

Perhaps the unhelpful should also have a  "PM required to the recipient of this" added to it.
I don't SELL this stuff... BUT I sure do ENJOY using it!!!

That's an excellent idea Dan!  I wonder if this software will do it.  I know that when you click "report to moderator" it says it records your ID, so such things can be done if the programmers are willing.

In the real world, the only constant is change.

When I'm online you can find me in the Home Automation Chat Room!

I actually don't care who gives the unhelpful or what they feel they are accomplishing!
But I would like to know Why  ::) as I'm sure many that receive the unhelpful votes would!

DING #56 (once again *WITHOUT* a preceeding PM!)

:o

This one came within 12 hours of my last Ooops post for DING #55.
(Mr. Rogers Voice: Children, can you say "SPITEFUL"?)

:-\

IIRC, I hadn't posted anything else new within that *VERY* short time period (or a few weeks before, for that matter).

???

Why X10 Management feels this is a "useful" feature I'll never understand.

:(

If only there was 'someone' available on the X10 Staff who could MONITOR these things and then take an appropriate action.
(Or at least provide the Community Organizers with some 'useful' feedback.)
