Technical Info on old BSR light switch modules
« on: February 19, 2007, 10:03:35 AM »

I've got a couple of old BSR X10-014701 "Remote Wall Light" switches.  They appear to work fine EXCEPT here in the winter they tend turn on by themselves or only dim down when programmed to turn off (1st one I installed dimmed, the one I replaced it with randomly turns on).  I suspect it has to do with the current sensing circuitry.  The problem switch controls a branch circuit that consists of 2 outside lamp posts and several outlets on the front of the house.  Christmas lights caused the dimming but now that we're down to just the lamp posts and 2 other decorative lights they randomly pop on during the day or night (turn off fine).  Seems to happen when it's breezy and the snow/rain is blowing around.  Anyway...the mods I've looked at for the newer switches/modules don't look much like what's in these animals so does anyone know where there might be some info on the old stuff?  My electronics knowledge is between novice and "dang I should have known better than to touch that!" (read schematics with some comprehension, some knowledge of component function, and a desire to learn)

Thanks.

I did a GOOGLE search for BSR X10-014701, and found nothing.   Is there an X10 equivalent for it?  Was the BSR X10-014701 a two-way or one-way module? I've found that regardless of the name on the module, it was made by X10 in the same factory in China. I have Motorola, Sears and Radio Shack modules (all lamp modules) still in service.

I suspect the  Technical Info on old BSR light switch modules is long gone.

If it ain't here, it probably ain't.

Are you sure you have a switch problem?
Have you checked lamp socket condition and tightness of bulbs? I have had slightly loose bulbs turn on from thermal expansion/contraction causing bulb to make and break connection.
BTW your description sounds like a X10 dimming wall switch is used to control outside outlets, which might lead to problems if someone plugs a non-dimmable appliance in to the outlets.

Only have one (it is unusual in the code wheels are behind a door) and I'm not getting rid of it. I don't remember where I got it, either  I can't locate the Sears one, but I've got a couple of Stanley ones, too.   A lot of us who have had X10 since the DOS days have all these oddball lamp modules, we'd grab 'em as we saw them.  Regardless, AHP sees all of them as Lamp modules and they work fine.  All newer ones are either X10 or Radio Shack ones.

Thats OK Dan, I just figured it out...I think you probably have a MAGNAVOX module, not a Motorola.
