Hey there,

First off I want to thank everyone for taking the time to read this and hopefully someone can help me out. I have read the forums until I am going crazy so I thought maybe I could ask my specific questions here.

My wife purchased the Harmony 1000 for me for Christmas and one of the things we want desperately to do if control our lighting. From what I have read I know I need IR543 in order to convert the IR signal from the remote to RF for the X10's... There are alot of things we would like to control, but I figured we will start very small.

We have 2 flood lights that are controlled by the large light switches (decorator switches).... I am confused about the Decorator Dimmer Switch and the Decorator Wall Switch.. The both look identical to me.

Also we would like to include a couple SuperSocket - Wall Receptacle Module (SR227), Appliance Module 2-Pin Polarized, and Appliance Module 3-Pin Grounded..


Is there any issues with using the IR543 to control these devices?

You shouldn't have any problems at all. I use the Logitech/Harmony 628 and IR543 in my home theater However, I should point out... the IR543 does NOT send RF... it only sends PLC (X10 signals over the powerline). You will very likely require a "phase coupler" to tie your two sides of your powerlines (search phase coupler for more info).

I just use the cheap passive phase coupler (dryer plug) linked above.

Also, you may want to check out X10's floodlights, they are a favorite of mine. They can turn on (X10 equipped) lights on the inside of your home as well when motion is detected. As well as turn on lights when it gets dark outside. My floodlights also turn on my video monitoring, and issues a voice announced warning.... you can see a video from my Web Page.

One thing about the Ir543, It only responds to ir commands from one House Code at a time. There is a more expensive ( modified) version called the ir543AH that can process all house codes using an ir remote. In other words you have to set the ir 543 to one house code. You can set it to any code A~P but but only one at a time. All 16 devices on a single  house code will work with that house code only. In other words say the ir 543 is set to house code B and if lamp 1 is  set to A1 and lamp 2 is set to B1 only lamp 2 will receive that commands from your ir remote.

Your both so right! I didn't want to scare jaboomba away. I got started in Home Automation when I built my Home Theater. I thought being able to dim the lights with a PalmPad remote would add the WOW-factor I wanted... and yet be cheaper than a motorized screen. I remember I ordered the RCA package deal (3 lamp modules, 3 appliance modules, and 2 wall switches) plus a transceiver and PalmPad remote.... and told my wife this will be all the automation I will ever need.

WARNING: jaboomba although what you have in mind can be easily done.... it may not be easy to stop there... this stuff can be addictive.

WOW!!! Thanks for all of the advice!!

I know I will get addicted.. My wife said she loves the idea as long as everything is easy and can be controlled by the new remote... So lets hope I can figure out how to make everything work!!!
