Irrigating out there...
« on: November 17, 2008, 04:21:41 PM »

Howdy,

I'm considering using Rain8 for some irrigation. Does anyone know if I can transmit X10 signals 300 ft on 120VAC power lines to Rain8 stations successfully?

I may depend on the setup you have in mind.
Things like are the X10 controller and Rain8 on the same branch line. Same or opposite phase of setup and if opposite is there a coupler or repeater in the mix.
Also any signal suckers or noise sources could effect things.
Any more details you may have would be helpful.

I have a choice of phases since I have both phases at the well pump (240VAC) where I plan to tie in. Assuming I can get the right phase, am not generating any noise, and don't have a repeater, will a typical X10 signal make it that far?

Kinda "iffy".

What are you using at the well pump to transmit the X10 signal?
For example an ACT TI103 RS232 interface would transmit a 5V signal which would go 300 feet if no noise. If what ever you use will not work you could always throw a Smarthome "BoosterLinc" in the mix. OR put a  XTB IIR at the pump.

Thanks Dave.

I will first try a setup without a repeater. If that doesn't work, I like your suggestion of the XTBIIR at the pumphouse - it's at about half the transmit distance (150ft). I read the XTBIIR functions as a repeater/amplifier.
