Help...Contractor Gone and It Has Stopped Working
« on: January 31, 2009, 10:40:43 PM »

I had some lights installed on a boat dock and in the yard leading to the dock from the house.  The contractor is nowhere to be found now and, as of today, remote operation of the lighting no longer works.  Here's the scenario...

HARDWARE:

TM751 transceiver is located in the same room of house as a wireless wall switch which the top two buttons turn on individually, the dock lights and yard lights.

Near the boat dock in an electric box is a V572A All House Code Transceiver attached to a Two-way Powerline Interface (TW523). A KR19A keychain remote (2 buttons) is used to turn on individually, the dock lights and yard lights.

On the dock are two covered switches, rocker style, with only one side of rocker capable of being pressed (i.e. press once to turn on, press again to turn off).

OPERATIONALLY:

You can turn on the dock lights and the yard lights via the switches on the dock.

You can hear the wireless wall switch inside the house make the TM751 “click”.

You can see the light on the bottom of the V572A blink when you push the keychain remote buttons.

The light on the outside of the two-way powerline interface is lit.

PROBLEM:

Neither the wireless wall switch (in house) nor the remote keychain will turn on either the dock lights or the yard lights.

ANY IDEAS ON WHAT MIGHT BE GOING ON?

Sounds like the V572 might have "lost" it's programming and is NOT transceiving the RF to the correct PLC.  Or the TW523 isn't putting the PLC onto the powerline.

Has anything changed in the home. Like a new cell phone charger, TV, Computer etc.? Anything that might suck up X10 signals or make power line noise?

Try the keychain remotes with the TM751 unplugged while near the WGL V572A. Since the TM751 is not polite. There is a chance it maybe stepping on the V572s signal and scrambling it.

First of all, let me say that I am truly in the dark as to how all of these work together.

Am I correct in saying that the TW523 and V572 work together along with the keychain remote outside of the house to operate the lighting?

Am I correct in saying that the TM751 and wireless 4 button wall switch work together inside the house to operate the lighting?

If the problem is with the V572, why are the TM751 and 4 button wall switch (inside the house) no longer working?

If both are not working, it seems like there would be some single point of failure affecting both the indoor and outdoor operation.

Problems such as yours can be caused by the addition of a single piece of electronic equipment that either attenuates the X10 signal on the powerline, or injects noise onto the powerline that corrupts X10 transmissions.  Something as simple as the charger for a new cellphone can be the culprit:

I don't know of anything that has changed within the house electrically.  The setup is at my in-laws house, so I don't know everything that might have changed, so I'll do a little more investigating.  The system worked fine for a year, and then just stopped working, both the wireless wall switch and the handheld remote...
