Radio / Cell Phone Alert Option ?
« on: March 15, 2009, 09:07:41 PM »

Just wondered if X10 do a cell phone dialer option for the alarm system. Gets around the problem of cut lines.

Also, how long does the battery backup last in the event of a power outage.

Thanks for input

trent posted this helpful tid-bit about using a cell phone with the dialer:  http://forums.x10.com/index.php?topic=6869.msg44898#msg44898

I think a little searching will produce even more cell phone work-around info.

I use a combination of AHP triggering a Dummy module that x10 Dispatcher is watching which "dispatches" batch file that pops off an instance of AlertDialer and ring goes my cell phone.

The batch file is nothing more than:

cd\program files\alerdialer
Alertdialer <phone number> "Text to say to you when it calls you"

To tell me that my security device DS10A has detected that I left my garage door open again.

Klugy, but wonderfully reliable and freeware (donationware)

Actually you don't need X10dispatcher in the mix!
AlertDialer will fire from a windows command directly from AHP this saves creating a dummy module and running another program!
Many users are confused, ::) thinking AlertDialer needs X10dispatch since it comes bundled with it! ;)

You can use a cell phone/landline docking station to call out using any telephone device in the home. The cellphone sits in the dock and you can dial out through it from any of your household phones or devicesthat are connected to the house phone wires.

I just set up a new system and have setup the XLink BT with a cell phone. I even have it hooked to my home phones so it rings throughout the house  just like a regular phone line. It dials out just fine using the cell phone to the numbers I have set in the dialer. It is only $10 per month and I got rid of my landline (saving me a bundle) and use the cell phone interface for my home phones and for my alarm dialing. Works great. Have it on a battery backup so even if the power goes out, it still works.

Very cool. Thanks for sharing that with the forum. How about some some links to the items you used.

I had used a UPS to provide backup power for the modem on my digital phone. I was surprised how short it's run time was. Even though the battery backup was rated to run a PC and monitor for 45 minutes... 45 minutes was the run time for the 10 watt modem too. At least you'll still have the cell phone battery... and a MUCH longer run.
