Question about MS14A
« on: October 06, 2009, 09:13:40 PM »

I have a motion sensor setup to watch a back door. It is set up to detect motion at all times. It has been working great for over a week. I did not touch anything and now it does not send the corect signal. It is set to D10. It now only sends a D11 signal which does not trigger the macro that has been working flawlessly.

Someone please help me undestand these things. I purchased 6 of these new. Three of them are working flawlessly since I first set them up. The other three are screwy. Meaning they worked fine for a few days and then they change and start sending the wrong signals and it seems they shut down. HELP!!!! B:(

After I posted this I took it down, replaced the batteries and reset it. I did all of this in the dark outside. I placed it back in position. Went inside for 30 seconds, came back out and it worked. Went back inside for about 5 minutes, came out and nothing. Waited about 15 minutes, came back outside and nothing. Did this thing just go bad over the last few days? My other 2 are acting the same way. Help!

So, you mean you checked the log and this one is sending the wrong address again?

It did not send any signal. I can see the red light flash but when I go to my activity log it does not show a signal being recieved.

This morning my wife leaves for work. One of my three good sensors failed to pick her up. This one has worked flawlessly as well over the last week or so.

Might be a marginal RF signal problem. There is a ton of information on this forum about RF range problems. Search: "Range", "Antenna", "Passive repeater", "CM15A range", etc.

A quick test would be to temporarly move your tranceiver (CM15A, TM751, RR501) closer to the motion sensors to see if they start working better.

I have a sensor much farther away than this one that is working fine. I replaced the batteries on the original sensor in this thread last night.

I think it is either dark that is causing the problem or the cm15a. not sure

Again these have been working flawlessly since I put them in over a week ago.

I assume you are aware that a MS14A motion detector set to address D10 for motion will also send a dark/light signal on address D11 from its built in photocell.

Yesterday it worked.
Today it doesn't work.
X10 on Windows is like that.

Yeah, if you have working units father away, it is not likely a range problem. The motion sensors in question aren't mounted to metal surface are they?

I wonder about X10 manufacturing quality. Most units appear to be hand inserted with leaded components. Very prone to build problems like wrong value parts on the insertion line. A QAQC inspection and final test would catch problems like that, but I think the X10 Pro line is the only line that gets the QC. Send the worst offenders back and see if new works any better.

Yes I am aware of that. However, they have been working perfectly for several days and all of a sudden they no longer work at night. It is like they changed all of a sudden.

I just walked outsid ethat door. I saw the red lights blink and after a 10 second delay it chimed. I waited 2 minutes and then walked out again and nothing. I walked past two other sensors and nothing.  This is why I need someone to explain these to me. How do I set up the sensors so that they work after dark.

I have set them per the instructions to notify of any motion. Someone please explain to me what to do to make them notify me all of the time.

Lets see, you said everything worked "flawlessly" and "perfectly" for several days and then quit. That tells me you did it right once, I'm not sure what can be "explained". There really isn't any "insider" secrets with the motion sensors other than extending the RF range. But you describe your problem as the units simply not seeing movement (red light doesn't come on when you walk in front of it). Usually the "xxxxEyes" are very realiable at picking up warm body movement within about 20 feet or so.

X10 has some fairly specific directions on how the motion sensors should be mounted. They should not be looking into direct sunlight or bright lights. They should not be looking directly at a heat source. They do not "see" well when the ambient temperature is very hot (>90 degrees). Use alkaline batteries only.

Maybe you should call X10. They may have made some bad ones.

These things worked great all day today. It was a bright sunny day. Now tonight they will not work. I set them again to send a signal on any motion. They will not.

tell us more.

How'd you know the MS didn't pick up motion?  Using AHP?  Lights not come on?

I'm placing my bets that the RF portion is OK and the PLC is marginal.

the AHP Activity monitor report could shed some light on this mystery.

Knight,
Based on AccurateOne description above, I assumed the xxxxEye isn't even seeing movement. Which is really strange. However if the the "detect" LED did come on, and AccurateOne failed to mention that, then I am on the wrong track and you are hot on the trail. PLC problem might also explain the "doesn't work at night" wierdisms.
