Question about wiring AW12
« on: March 29, 2010, 09:44:38 AM »

Hi all,

I have a question regarding my understanding of wiring an AW12 unit into a light. I am starting with a clean slate, so I can run live and neutral, and the switch will be very close to the light.

I'm looking at the How To install tab at http://www.uk-automation.co.uk/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=&products_id=1007 (option A) and from what I can see, it's asking me to split my live wire - is this correct? So I would split the incoming (from mains) live wire and run one connection to the AW12 module, and the other to my switch? Something like the following:

Is this right, or am I misunderstanding something here?

Thanks in advance,

I am going by the users manual in your link as we don't have that type of module here in the US.

Looks good.
Live goes to the L terminal of the AW12 and to one of the local control switches terminals.
The control wire from the AW12 goes to the other local control switches terminal.
Neutral goes to one of the AW12s N terminals
The Lamp being controlled goes to the other N of the AW12 and to the SL terminal of the AW12.

Excellent - thanks... Now to pull it all apart and try and work out why that didn't work then :(

Is the local switch a on and off [make and break] type or a momentary one?
Instructions show the AW12 working differently between a momentary and make and break type.

It's a make and break type (single pole) switch. I saw some differences in operation of the unit, but I don't recall seeing anything about the wiring being different for this ? I saw that this could be used to set a new address (to enter program mode).

I don't think the wiring is different. The way the local switch works is different depending on which type it is.
Have you made any progress with your problem?

I'm back, this time with a photo. I removed the AW12 from the original circuit and butchered a lamp as seen in this photo:

This shows the wiring as per the diagram at the start of this post. The wires coming in from the right of the picture are from the mains.

I've tried on and off for A1 - A8 with my black switch in both positions with no result.

I removed the switch and wired it in the other way around, not that I expected this to make a difference, and still no result. I tried a second AW12 unit with the same outcome.

Any ideas on how I can progress this?

Thanks in advance...

Look real carefully as I missed it in your original diagram. B:(
The L and SL wires look reversed to me. The lamp is connected to the L and the Live is connected to the SL.

Sorry I also missed it on the first look.
