Their answer to this is the Icon Remotes.

Although at this point in technology, you're going to have an LCD, it better be a touch screen, and it better track the on/off status' of devices.

I guess the answer to that would be a mobile phone app that works with your HA software...

Yes I have a couple of Icons, and I do like the LCD. But it would just be great to have a Palm Pad where each button could be individually programmed.

I've thought for years it would be nice if X10 would simply put a House Code "knob" on the PalmPad controllers that would allow you to easily select a different house code.  I've modified mine using the "code clickers" and stacking two together by gluing, but this is an inconvenience when they should simply ship that way!
