Circuit breaker on purpose idea
« on: December 29, 2010, 06:25:24 AM »

Assume you have a 15 amp power strip.

I am trying to make a remote OFF, stay OFF device.

If I use an X10 signal to activate a switch that shorts a receptacle on the power strip, the built in circuit breaker will trip and all power will say off until it is manually reset.

Is there a safe way to do it?

I second the No.
Good way to blow out an X10 module or worse.

I have a power bar that when it loses power it has to be manually reset.
Maybe you need to look at one of those . Send a x10 signal to it to turn off, a x10 on signal will do nothing.

Link?
OK I had to dig this one out put on my glasses and use a magnifying glass!
it is made by Windmere corporation
On the bar it says"Power Safe by Windmere"
It has a on/off switch and 7 outlets
The model number on the bar is pt-10
Now here is the confusing part
On the plug  where there is a test and reset button like a ground fault
it states model number is  ESP-061
Groundfault circuit interrupter.
I spent a fair bit of time looking for a link but couldn't find a helpful link!

WINDMERE CORP. is in Miami Lakes Fl.
You may be able to contact them and request a location where you could find one if they even make it anymore.
I Hope that helps!

I was just thinking I had some GFCI outlets that would trip to off with a power outage!
I've since replaced them. Maybe a portable GFCI would work this way  since that is what the PowerSafe is.
Many manufactures make these and I found one link with several modules
http://gfcioutlets.com/constructionportable.htm
You'd have to ask if they tripped to off with a power disruption
