Mobile Home Based Automation Using SMS
« on: March 20, 2012, 03:21:03 PM »

I am very much interested in X10 Technologies(modules). Currently am
working on a project topic "Mobile Home Based Automation System using SMS".

My worry now is that,I have purchased X10 modules ( Lamp and Appliance)
from the US,and want help if a programming code in either
of the  to programming languages C++,C#,VB.Net,C or any programming
langauge remotely control the X10 Modules using SMS from a phone.
Because I don't want to use the software that comes with the kit for my project work.

Large quantitties of both the lamp & appliance modules would be imported into my country
for household owners,if this project become successful, much of your products would be
recommended in my country for household owners.

You need more than software.

1. You need a way to send the X10 codes to the powerline.

2. You need something to bridge between SMS and whatever hardware you choose for #1 above. There are SMS modems for connecting to a PC but I've no idea how you might connect without a PC or at least a tablet. Perhaps others can make recommendations for this aspect of your application.

And, as Dan has already asked, it might help to know which country.

X-10's CM11A sends to (and receives from) the powerline and has an RS232 interface so it is likely the best choice for #1.

It may not be a good time to be starting with X10 technology. They have been having problems supplying products to the US market.

We need to wait to find out what country the OP is in before we can assist.  He's NOT in the US or Canada.

True, but if he doesn't live in the US or Canada his X10 equipment isn't the same as here.

His first post said he has purchased US lamp and appliance modules so he must be in a country that has the same electrical system characteristics.

Here's the last part of Victor88's post: "Large quantitties of both the lamp & appliance modules would be imported into my country
for household owners,if this project become successful, much of your products would be recommended in my country for household owners."

That tells me he's not in the US or Canada.

It tells me vic is not realistic. SMS driven home automation in third world country isn't going to result in the multitudes breaking down your door. I just don't see a lot of people getting all excited about sending a text and turning on their hot tub or closing their garage door. But then I laughed at FedEx and bottled water also.....

Guys tanks u all for u comment.I am in Ghana West Africa. At the moment I have purchased an Appliance Module (HD236) and a Lamb module.According to my research I have discovered that, its possible to control an appliance from your home by using a
1.Mobile Phone

2.PC(with a GSM modem and X10 Active Home Pro connected to it as the Gateway).
The GSM and the X10 Active Home Pro would be connected to the PC at home.so wen the user sends a message for example "sendpls,A3 off",the GSM Modem would received the message for the appropriate middle ware to convert the command to binary digits which would then be broadcasted by the X10 Active Home Pro for the appropriate X10 Appliance module to execute the command

3.Appliance module

But guys my greatest worry is how to come up with the middle ware (software in C or C++ or in any programming language) is my problem.......this ma personal email address agborloh@yahoo.com Thanks guys

Ghana uses 230V/50Hz so you will need to buy X10 modules from Europe (at much higher prices than for US modules). For the PC, X10 Europe has the CM11 and Marmitek makes the CM15 and there are lamp and appliance modules as well. There is existing software that works with the US versions of those controllers and via AHP, and presumably with the European as well, that does what you want but I do not know whether source code is available.

Victor88,
You'll need the X10 sdk http://www.x10.com/activehomepro/sdk/
there are some samples included.
there is also other code found in this section for additional help.
The software will work with both European and US PC interfaces.
If you use microsoft visual studio there is online help for finding code to respond to email which is basicaly what a SMS is.
There are already several thirdparty softwares that will do what your looking to do.
Some are a little more difficult to set up then others.
