Sourcing a RJ11 cable
« on: March 15, 2018, 12:16:41 PM »

I need a deemingly difficult to find cable, so I thought I'd ask if anyone here has a source that they could recommend.  I need a coiled phone cable with 4 conductors (6p4c or RJ11) and a stretched length of around 10-15 feet.  I can only seem to locate either RJ10/4p4c or non-coiled RJ11/6p4c cables.

Always coming up against this problem too so bit the bullet and purchased this tool a while back along with a reel of cable and connectors RJ11 and RJ45. I wouldn't be without it now.

AMAZON

This is an example of the lroblem I'm having.  The cable kooks perfect until I dig deep into the description where it states both RJ11 and 4p4c.  It also states handset, so that confirms 4 oin connector.

I hadn't considered replacing the connectors on my existing cable.  That might be a good option.

I bought a 1,000ft reel of Cat5e 4 twisted pair for $50 and a mixture of Rj45 and RJ11 blank connectors along with the crimping tool. The purchase has well paid for itself by now now and the flexibility to create your own cable lengths is a joy. Nothing worse when you are in the middle of a job having to stop to order a pre made cable.

I have a portion of a 1000' box myself.  This specific problem needs a coiled cable rather than straight.  I'm stopping by the home store today to see if they carry crimpers locally.

A 4P (RJ10) plug will fit securely in both 6P (RJ11) and 8P (RJ45) jacks so unless you need more than 4 conductors a handset cord should do the job just fine.  There's really no need to replace the plugs if you only need 4 conductors.

A crimper is a handy thing to have. After 40+ years of making cables, I highly recommend the Ideal EZ plugs for making up cables that are round instead of flat. The plugs have a slot so all the cable ends go through the plug and are cut off by a blade on the Ideal EZ crimper when crimped.  This makes the job MUCH easier and more accurate when using round cables.

In my experience, 4p generally fit securely in 6p.  In this xase, it does not so a 6p is needed.  The home center had crimpers and 6p connectors, so I cut the wnds off my existing cable and replaced them.
