I inquired about a cam you could
use when you go out, to "broadcast" from your car back to your home or visa
versa, and was told there is'nt yet a cam that can transmit signals or video
in that way- that it would need to work like a cell phone does, with towers to
carry the waves or signals. That may not be the same as what you wanted to
do, would a cell ph. with built in camera do what you need? that's one possible option.

You can use any camera that you can connect
to a computer.  Wired, wireless from X10 or
a simple webcam.  The trick is you need a
notebook computer or, if you want to get
really tricky, a desktop with plenty of
cushioning (Desktop harddrives don't respond
well to shock while operating like notebooks
do).  Then you need a celluar telephone on a
digital network with a cable or bluetooth (I
suggest cable)and software that lets the
computer use the phone as a modem.  You then
connect to the internet throught the phone
and use the webcam as normal.  Very
expensive though because now Cell companies
are using data for this access instead of
voice like they did 3 years ago and since a
lot of data has to be sent and recieved for
video, you are going to pay through the nose
for this privilege.

Actually, with a notebook computer (and a
cheap one at that), you can get a Sprint
Wireless card that uses the same technology
as a cell phone for about $80.00 / month
for unlimited data receive/transmit.  Put
this PCMCI card in your notebook, hook up a
wired/wireless camera and have your
notebook snap pictures and transmit emails
(or to a website) every 5 min or however
fast you would like.

Also (if the price is not a problem AND if
you live within the coverage area) VERIZON
has a data service also for
$80/month...unlimited...which had data rates
anywhere from 60kb to 1 MB (not sure if this
is up or just download).

With a decent little Web cam and sub 1000
notebook....as basic streaming webcam should
work fine...howeve...mount it in such a
manner that a window is not directly behind
you (e.g. lower shot up (roof would be in
backgroud...or maybe on dash pointing back.)

If the background is the sunny sky (through
the window) you will just be a sillouette.

Hope this works out.

Cellular card are a bit easier and one less
wire to worry about.  However, with a cell
phone you can position it anywhere in the
car for the best reception when traveling
through remote areas.
