Two window contacts/ One Window Sensors HELP
« on: November 20, 2004, 04:02:29 AM »

Hello

I thought I read it is possible to run 2
window contacts with one sensor. If this is
correct any clue how this is done and where
to get extra contact?? Any input would be
great

Thanks
Jerry

Yes it can be done. The added sensor must be
the type that the magnetic switch is closed
when the magnet is close to it. The switches
are connected in series. Unscrew one of the
wires screwed to the original switch.
Connect it to one of the new switches
connections. Connect the second switches
other wire where the original wire you
removed was connected. In the new
connections one of the original and one of
the new switches connect to the sensor module
the other original and new switch connect to
each other and nothing else. Just insulate
them with tape after connecting them
together.

Radio Shack carries magnetic switches for
security use. I believe you want normally
open that closes when the magnet is brought
close to the switch. If you try the Shack
just ask to make sure it is closed when the
magnet is close to the switch.

I forgot to ask your application. The way I
gave you is for both switches have to be
closed together. If either one is opened the
module trips. If you wanted to have it so
maybe a window can be in two positions
without tripping the alarm. Then you have to
connect the switches in parallel. One wire
from each goes to one of the modules
connections. That way if eithar one is made
the alarm will not be tripped. Both would
have to be opened for it to trip.

I would think that you'd want to run them in
series anyway, so that, if either window was
opened, the alarm would go off.

Me too but someone may have a need to have a
window partially open and protected. Though
if you mounted the sensor high enough two
magnets on the window would most likely also
work.
