Keypad mod for a DS7000
« on: March 25, 2005, 12:18:33 AM »

Has anyone tried any mods to their DS7000
that would allow you to use a keypad to
arm/disarm it?  I've been mulling it over,
but don't want to re-invent the wheel if
it's been done.  Thanks!

I have taken a Genie garage door remote
keypad and instead of using the output wires
that normally go to the garage door opener.
I took the ouput wires and ran them to the
arm button on the DS7000 keypad. Since the
Genie keypad output wires are only closing
normally open contacts. you don't have to
worry about any voltages being sent to your
DS7000. Yes you have to get into your
security keypad to make this mod, but mine
is working well.
P.S. The only time I have a problem is
when I set the alarm from my Genie keypad,
and there is a problem with a sensor, I have
to go back to the DS7000 keypad and press
the bypass button to arm the system. So now
before I leave the house and arm the system,
I check my DS7000 panel for any problems.

Perfect, Tom.  That's exactly the sort of
thing I was thinking about.  Thanks for
your response!

You could probably also wire the keypad into
a DS7000 remote control and not have to
worry about breaking open the DS7000.

considering a purchase--what is the system
doing/ not doing that makes the key pad
trouble-some?
thanks,
John.

My wife also has the same complaint. She
wants an external keypad for the DS7000 !
Having kids, having each one carry a
security remote just is not practical.
Leaving a controller handy enough to turn
the system off without time to take off
your shoes, make's it too easy for a theif.
Come-on X10, come up with an external
security keypad remote.

I posted this question a while back.
I was looking for a homelink capable
keypad.  With the homelink, you can memorize
the arm/disarm from your remote.  Works in
my car.  So far I have not been able to find
a keypad that transmitts homelink.
