Use any smoke detector with that provides
normally closed contacts to an X10 door
window sensor's magnetic reed switch leads.
You must remove the reed switch for this
configuration to work properly.

Has anybody successfully connected a smoke
detector to the x10 system. If so, how
about the details.
Thanks in advance

Brian: I have a smoke detector that triggers
the DS7000 when smoke detected. Purchase
a "First Alert Model SA304" with light.
(Avaiable at Wal-Mart $15.00) Solder the
coil of a 5 vdc relay to the light wires on
smoke detector(Relay avaiable at Radio Shack
$4.50). An X10 door/window sensor can then
be wired to the normally closed contacts of
relay ($10.00 Ebay - remove and discard the
magnetic switch). When detector senses
smoke, it opens relay contacts and the
door/window sensor triggers the DS7000. If
DS7000 is not armed- it will chime- Great
for basement or area where you can't hear
smoke detector. If DS7000 is armed, it will
alarm and call cell phone numbers you
programed. Advantage of this is that you can
listen in and hear if the smoke detector set
off alarm. Total cost of my project was less
then thirty dollars.

Chuck, Works for me. Just type the link
into your browser exactly as it is in the
message. Dont try to paste it in.

Brian,
The SALM smoke detector at Save-on
Security.com comes with the powerflash
module and a lamp module. Its a bit pricey
at $140.00. The smoke detector alone is
$69.00. I believe I would try James's mod at
$30.00 to work with X10 security systems.
Only drawback I see is any modification to
X10 door / window sensor voids the warrenty.

Aaron, Since the magnetic switch is a screw-
on component, just screw the magnetic
switch back on if the module fails and
return it. I often add a second switch when
I need to protect 2 doors or windows in the
same area so turning the screws is not a
big deal.

James, Thanks for sharing the smoke detector
modification. I tried it and it works great
with my DS7000 security system.

Chuck:
What was the RS part number for the 5 volt
relay. The sales associate did not know
what I was looking for?
Thanks

The Radio Shack relay part number is 275-
240. It is a 5 volt dc relay with a normally
open and a normally closed set of contacts.
Solder the two wires from the door
window/sensor to the normally closed set of
contacts. I did have to bend up a plastic
tab inside(next to chime)the SA304 First
Alert smoke detector to hot glue the relay
in place. What I liked about this mod was
that the smoke detector chime and escape
light still worked with the relay coil wired
to escape light. This way the smoke detector
low battery beep should not trigger alarm.

I recently saw that First Alert has the
ONELINK system out that has wireless
communication between smoke detectors. Has
anybody looked into whether or not this
will work or can be modified with the x-10
system? The ONELINK system use a radio link
between the battery units. Any thoughts
would be helpful to all of us. I am familar
with the use of the door sensor and relay
for hooking up a first alert with light,
but the OneLink appears to be on the right
track. Too Bad x-10 doesn't put one out for
the system.
