garage door monitoring
« on: December 30, 2005, 02:23:00 PM »

I am trying to figure out the best way to
moniotr if my garage door was left open and
I am inside the house. Is there a way to
have one of the door/window sensors to be
mounted on the garage door it self and have
a chime or light inside the house go on or
off whenever the garage door is open or
closed. Any ideas.
Thanx

I used a Powerflash module, a magnetic reed
switch mounted on the door, a chime and a
couple of lamp modules.  The powerflash
sends an 'on' code which is recieved by the
chime and lamp modules when the door
opens.  When the door closes the powerflash
module sends an 'off' command to which the
lamp modules responds to (the chime does
not need an 'off' command).  By adding more
lamp modules I can 'see' if the door is
open or not anywhere in the house.

Thanx Tommy,
That is one of the few modules that I don't
have (Powerflash module), But on another
note: Is that power flash module going to
interfere with my alarm system, because I
do not want the alarm to go off when the
garage door opens? Also I am not familiar
with the magnetic reed switch, is that one
of the door window sensors (normaly closed)?
Thanx again.

Here's a link to see what they look like
(Only the switch is OPEN with the magnet
engaged).

The one I used was a N.O./N.C. with a
common pole so it could be used either
way.  At first I used the wrong type and I
had to use a constantly running computer to
reverse the switch sensing via software.
The powerflash module triggers with a
switch contact or applied voltage.  Perfect
for use with the magnetic switch as it
provide that switch contact when the magnet
moves away from the switch.  I don't think
it would interfer with your alarm setup as
the module has house and unit code 'wheels'
on it so you can set it to what you want to
match the chime or lamp modules.
