Looking for a solution, maybe x-10??
« on: March 24, 2006, 05:33:06 AM »

Hello! I'm looking for a solution, here is the problem.
I've got a remote cabin, heated to keep pipes from freezing, power often fails.
Is there a product that would allow me to simply call my cabin and get some feedback on what the current temperature is?

I was thinking an x-10 module that peridocially measures the ambient temperature, logs onto the internet via the computer and sends me an e-mail?

Anything like that available?
If I got the notice I could drive up to the cabin and provide alternate heat, or call our caretaker and have him stop by and do the same.

Thanks for any clues.

medicineman :
This is posible although I'm not sure where I read about doing this! there are weather stations you can get that will post to the internet (not sure of the Brand)
Depending on how handy you are you could rig something up which would trigger an universal module which would send a x10 command to  the Cm15A then trigger a macro that would email you using MYHouse Online or the freeware X10dispatcher.

Don't know if this will serve your purpose or not.

Google "sensaphone".

I have used an older (and cheaper) model Sensaphone sucessfully since early 90's. It calls you if certain pre-programmed parameters are exceeded. i.e. high-low temperature, loss of electricity, "noise level" etc. It also has external inputs which can be used for security input, moisture/flooding, etc. etc. You can also call sensphone and it will report back with sensor status. "Electricity OK", "Tempurature OK", "External input one OK" etc.

It does not utilize Internet.

I've seen a device that will actually call you if the temp drops below a preset temperature, if you want I'll try to look it up.

SmartHome sells them. They also have one on auction. Auction ends 3/28/06 1:45:34 PM.

I bought the X-10 home security package for $99 and connected one of Door/Window Sensors (DS10A) to a cheap thermostat.  When the thermostat calls for heat (ie it's too cold), the Voice Dialer Console (PS561) calls me at home!

At risk of stating the obvious, if you are worried about the cabin freezing because of a power failure, make sure that the solution you find will work without power.
