start up not working in colour

My cameras sometimes start up in black and white, and don't function continuously.  It is like maybe they turn on for about a second every once in awhile, maybe once a minute or two, and the screen jumps, and they stay like that.  If I exit from the software and then start it again, eventually the problems seems to resolve.  Is this my set up or is there a problem.
