Door/Window Sensor Question
« on: July 27, 2006, 09:45:28 AM »

I do not have an X10 Security system but I need to kinow when the front door is opened. Can I make the door sensor trigger an x10 wired outlet to turn on a light or buzzer or can this be done any other way? What do I need to do this, I have Tm751, also mini-timer.

A door switch could be wired to a Powerflash unit (PF284). The Powerflash would then send an X10 signal to control a single house/unit code or even flash all the lights on a HC if you like. Of course the door switch could even be wired directly to any low voltage device such as this wireless door bell also.

Hi,
Well lets see. You already have the TM751 transceiver.
You will need a door/window sensor and a remote chime or Powerflash Burglar Alarm Interface.
That's it.
You can actually save money by NOT buying them separately.
The remote chime is $24.99 The door window sensor is $19.99 The Powerflash Burglar Alarm Interface is $29.99
If you go to  http://www.x10.com/onsale/index.html#93e11.6dd

You could get:       1   Small Wireless Transceiver (TM751)   $12.99
                              2   EagleEye Motion Sensor (MS14A)       $49.98
                          1   Sensor Chime (SC546A)                      $24.99
For $29.99
You could also get 6   Door/Window Sensor (DS10A)               $119.94
For $29.99

I would suggest that you determing everything that you want to do and then search through the X10 website for deals.
Sure you'll end up with some things you don't want BUT you save $$$ and have a more complete system. It all depends on what all you want to do.

OK, Thanks but will I need 1 powerflash unit for each door sensor or can 1 powerflash work for multiple sensors. (Sorry, but I am new to this X-10 stuff)

Yes, unless your doors are side by side or you want to run a lot of wires.  ;)

:) Tis is very true, what steven r said.
If you have double doors/french doors or side by side doors, you can wire sensors/switches together.

Will I still have to buy powerflash units if I purchase an X-10 home security system?

No. Sensors in that case are wireless and communicate back to the console.

Hmmm...  Will the X-10 security system send out an X10 signal if a door is opened and the system is _disarmed_?  How about an audible signal?  It's not clear that the OP (portside)  would want to keep the system armed all the time while at home.  And unless an audible signal is very loud, it might not be heard in rooms of the house distant from the security console unit.  If the system is armed and a door is opened, the OP might have to manually shut off the system to silence it.

The door/window sensor is useless without the X-10 security system as its signal is not detected by the TM751 or RR501 transceiver modules.  However the magnetic switch supplied with the sensor could be used to actuate a PowerFlash module.  (I have no idea how much a similar magnetic switch would cost if purchased separately at retail - it might be less expensive to buy the X-10 door/window sensors when they're on a good sale and just use the switches.)

I think the OP's best bet is to use a magnetic switch and PowerFlash module for each door (or several doors which are close together)
and one or more Chime Modules distributed around the house so they can be heard anywhere in the house.  An alternative to a Chime Module is a UM506 Universal Module, which can be configured for a momentary "beep-beep-beep-beep" which is appreciably louder than the Chime Module.  Or possibly use a Chime Module for one door and a Universal Module for another door. so they can be distinguished.

Yesterday it worked.
Today it doesn't work.
X10 on Windows is like that.

I can't remember what I paid for one at Radio Shack but it was pretty cheap. I think it was less than $5.

The security console will ding in run 2. But isn't loud.
I think steven r's suggestion to use a wireless door bell makes a lot of sense.
Using lights doesn't seem like a good idea. You'd have to have several flash in order to see one depending on where you are in the home.
This would also entail more hardware (expense).
