What are the differences between the ds7000 and the pro2000?
« on: August 19, 2006, 09:32:49 AM »

I am having difficulty understanding the differences between the ds7000 and the pro2000.  Can some of you experienced x10ers help explain why I would want to choose one over the other?  On the surface they seem very similar.  I want to install a monitored service such as one using "ORCA."  Thanks in advance for your help!

...i see a thread just started with basically the same question so I'll keep an eye on those responses.

I may have seen the 49-1000 in a RadioShack store, but never paid it any attention until I read the bit about 32 Zones in pcbugdoc's thread.

Although I've had a DS7000 for over a decade (does anyone remember what model number the 'siren-sized' beige RS unit without the phone dialer was before that? I had that too!) and bought a second complete kit for spare parts when my original's keyboard died, I read the 49-1000's Owner's Manual last night and it piqued my interest - maybe not for $99, but when it goes on *SALE*...  8)

I also just read the archived messages here on "49-1000". According to Brian H, all of the X-10 "Security Stuff", except the sirens, work with it (replacing all my door/window and motion sensors, keychains, security palmpads would be a deal-breaker! $$$).

You can program the pro 2000 yourself to communicate with a monitoring company but not the ds7000 which has a built in dialer to deliver voice messages the 2000 was designed to be used with monitoring companies other then ORCA, and has a digital communicator that should work with most. If you decide to get the 2000 you will need the pro-ware software one other thing is that the 2000 will also work with ORCA so I actually think it's better then the Monitor plus . Check the link out below for a pdf file on the pro 2000. Actually to program this thing and understand everything you will also need to take a look at the manual for the Monitor Plus you can find that on x10's sight. One last thing you will need to connect the serial port of your computer hopefully you don't have just a notebook to the RJ11 port on the 2000 to download the programing. I also have a link to the software if you're interested, just let me know ;D

The 49-1000 is a nice unit and 32 zones is a pro but when compared to the protector plus 12 piece deal (if you wait for the sale) sold at $99 and subtract $15 for joining the newsletter you get a whole lot for your money for $85 compared to RS $99. That is only if you don't need 32 zones or should you not require professional monitoring. That said there is a RS coupon floating around for $10 off $40 purchases... I also plan to buy a few 49-1000 once they officially go on clearance....

TakeTheActive - Regarding the siren sized unit; are you referring to 49-329 which is a siren sized handheld alarm with sensor and keypad? My friend and I both recently picked up this unit for under $15 since they are on clearance. Believe it or not but it's actually a pretty decent unit for what it is and does. It also functions as a door chime and will work multiple units on the same remote once programmed... I use it for an accessory building that I have that is too far to protect using standard X10.

LorenWagner - The main difference between the two is the DS7000 is not intended for professional monitoring and instead it uses a standard RJ11 landline or voip over broadband to personally call you when any sensor trips.

I am interested in getting this software but I am not sure if it is for sale or where I can find it.  If it is freeware and you can provide a link, I would love to have it.  Thanks.
