Just wondering, after sitting here endlessly watching longingly for the nod to go ahead, whether it is a viable and sensible option to finally purchase AHP?

Or should I just give in and buy Smarthomes reliable but not quite as pretty slightly less capable offering instead? (Is it all that much less able as some people here would have me believe?)

I know this sort of question has been asked before, but every few months I think its time for a recheck. Thanks for your opinions.

JP2510:
I'd be happy to have a discussion with you
about AHP, I only have AHP, not Smarthome.

George, JP, let's talk.  I have been through
all, Lighthouse, cm11a, cm15a, and now
1132cu.  Dick.Collier3@excite.com.

Why is everyone not talking about this
topic here in an open forum.  I don't
understand all the email swapping.  your
beginning to sound like X10Pro.

joe

I suspect it is because of all the
"mysterious" data base crashes which result
in posts being trashed (by accident)

Joe

Charles Sullivan

My recollection is that a bunch of messages
were lost on _one_ occasion a few months ago.
Has it happened again?
Yesterday it worked.
Today it doesn't work.
X10 on Windows is like that.

HEYU - X10 Automation for Linux, Unix, and Mac OS X     http://www.heyu.org

X10 Pro

We've lost data twice, but other than that we
let discussions stand. I'm a little uneasy
have e-mail addresses posted openly (not
something I would do with my personal e-mail
address), but if you guys are OK with it then
I'll leave them there. If you want me to
remove your e-mail address from a post at any
time in the future, let me know.

That said, I think it's worth giving
ActiveHome Pro a shot, JP. Yes, this is
coming from an X10 employee, but I think the
product is in pretty solid and reliable
shape, and you'll be able to do a lot of good
things with it.

Bob Taylor

JP, don't listen to this X10 employee, they
have to say that.  The controller and
software is a real dog.   The newest
controler (CM15A with diagnostics, commonly
refered to on the forums as Diagnostic
CM15A)is pretty solid.   The software is
many moons from beginning to run like
production software.  If you want to play /
tinker a lot with technology, buy and use
their CM15A with AHP software. If you want
the best system - Buy their bundles, much
cheaper than buying their equipment from
other vendors, never un-box the CM15A and
never install their software (you may get
some other system problems with your PC
after you install it, if you can install
it). Buy a SmartHome USB controller with
software and seperately an RF antena if you
want to talk to your devices from a
wireless keypad.  Store the CM15A or throw
it away.   SmartHome Controller & RF Antena
& software will cost you more than X10's
solution but..............You will get a
solid / working / easy to use / maintain
system.    No matter what equipment you
choose you may still have some of the X10
architectural / engineering / technical
issues to deal with - loss of signal, noise
on AC line, random signals, electrical
phase, etc. those problems can be in
anyone's home or office.   They are easier
to fix if you know your controller is
working....

Bob Taylor

JP PS:  My latest problem - I cannot even
get my AHP software to register online
through their system after re-installing
it, others have the same problem and the
good folks at X10 point the finger back to
the user.  They have bigger fish to fry
then helping me.......

Bob Taylor

X10 Tech - Shame on you, the product is
only worth trying if the user wants to play
with technology, fix random and solid
problems and help you guys do your job and
help your company sell more product.   You
think your product is becomming pretty
solid ?   Live in the real world with real
peopl.  I'll bet you would not be making
that recommendation if your paycheck
depended on that recommendation, you'd be
out looking for a job before the next forum
response.

Bob Taylor

This whole situation is sad, and getting
sick, X10 makes a very cheap / bad USB
controller (CM15A), some work, some don't,
all have some similar problems - RF antena
is poorly designed / weak / etc. And their
software is pathetic !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But as I will continue to say - their
modules, light switches, Keypads, other
components are great, other vendors even
sell them because they are good and fairly
priced.

If you want some cheap entertainment - buy
and try to use their CM15A & AHP software.

joe

Solid product? mah gawd this is pain. JP dont
listen to him. I have been in this CM15A
fiasco for over 8 months. It still does not
work well. The X10pro thinks this is a solid
product. NO WAY! It is not fully functional
and now that they have fixed the daily
crashes, take a look at AHP. The activity
monitor has never been fixed properly. How
can they say it is a solid product when
people cant register the software, get it to
run without crashing, etc. OR the crazy
battery ritual we all have to perform
occasionally. I have not taken any action
against X10 because for $50, it is just not
worth the aggrivation. Just dont connect this
thing up to anything important. OK to turn on
porch lights, nobody is going to die if the
unit crashes but I would never connect it to
garage doors, coffee pots or anything else
you dont want going haywire at random times.

JP, go ahead and buy it if you want to give
it a try but dont believe for a minute what
X10pro told you. This product is not what it
is advertised to be - "never come home to a
dark house again" Yeah, right.....

Joe

Bob Taylor

Hey Joe - I knda like the battery ritual,
only took me a few weeks to figure out the
magic sequence that works the best when
updating the software or loading the CM15A -
chuckle, chuckle, chuckle, reminds me of
some crazy computer rituals back in the
Windows 3.0 days.  I also kinda long for
the days when we had to leave a computer
plugged into the CM15A just to get it to
run for a couple hours...  This X10 Tech
should get back to work on the software
problems and stop recommending that anyone
else buy or try to use it till they deliver
a solid version.....   One that does not
introduce more problems than it fixes, one
that does not come out just so they can run
an new piece of hardware they want to start
selling.  Make good on the promise they
made to their current customer base....
