Any of your readers who have purchased rechargeable flashlight and appliances in the past. Know what a dissapointment it is to go to use it in a power outage only to find the batteries are in need of a charge. Of course we all know that if you leave most equipment on a charger all the time you ruin the batteries.
I use X-10 "Active Home" software and programmable module to control an appliance module with a surge strip (multi-outlet) with all my emergency or rechargeable devices' charges plugged into it. I set it up to charge for a certian period each day (15 mins work for my equipment Flashlights and lanterns) you need to experiment with your) and my equipment is always charged and ready for use without overheating or overcharging the batteries.

All you need is the Home Automation kit

I also used an inline module to seperate my "Track Lights from the Overhead light in the Kitchen without having to run new wiring in the hot, cramped attic. Now it the summer when I want to use the ceiling fan on the Kitchen overhead fixture, I can turn off the track lights on the same circuit no waisted energy.

Imagination is the only limit to the applications for X-10

i have a very large o-scale model railroad in the basement. i have stationary x10 now and broadcast live operation sessions on the net now. i let anyone who would like to see my trains in operation watch. with the x10 sentinel i could move the cam to follow the trains. i could do sensational night time operations with just street light and yard lights on. i could COVER the whole layout in the coal operations yard operations. it would allow those watching to follow the train down the main line just as if they where in the cab of the locomotive. to win the x10 sentinel would open up a new world for those watching my csx model railroad operations.
HAVING TROUBLE ADING PICTURES OF LAYOUT THANK YOU

It just amazes me how "free stuff" motivates people! ...
I too have been impressed by the number of newbies this has brought the forum.

Let me echo to those new to the forum that your feedback and questions in other parts of the forum are welcome also.

I'm also optimistic that X10 is reading this branch of the forum and that it may lead to them interacting more with some of the operational issues of AHP and some of the unlabeled new versions of modules referenced elsewhere in the forum.

...we all know that if you leave most equipment on a charger all the time you ruin the batteries....
While the better chargers these days won't hurt batteries, at least not like early chargers did, it does waste energy leaving most chargers plugged in even when they aren't charging batteries.

...I set it up to charge for a certain period each day (15 mins work for my equipment Flashlights and lanterns)....
For most batteries this is a good idea but for NiCd batteries, frequent charging can be worst thing for them. It's always good to let a NiCd battery totally discharge before recharging. So be careful if any of your devices use NiCd batteries. Frequent recharging of NiCd batteries before they have totally discharged can lead to a battery "memory" problem that train the battery to have a short use cycle.

...Imagination is the only limit to the applications for X-10...
Imagination has bridged over many a hardware challenge.

Never underestimate an idiot that doesn't know what he's doing is suppose to be impossible.

I have a normal, 2 pin, lamp module (I'll have to get the model number) that I plug into the back of an APCC UPS (I'll have to retrieve the model number when I'm at home).  I use the "Slim Switch" and a wireless transceiver (I'll have to get those models, as well).  The lamp has a 12w CF bulb (equal to a 60w, I believe).  As soon as the power goes out and the UPS switches to battery, the lamp module automatically turns on (I don't know why, but it is perfect for what I need).

Now, I don't have to stumble around in the dark looking for a flash light.  The light just turns on instantly.  Only drawback is that, in a power outage that lasts two seconds (has happened on occasion), the light will just turn on.  No big deal, though.  I'd rather have it instant-on for those pitch-black, moonless nights, than stumble around my house, which will result in my hurting myself (has happened on several occasions already. :(  )

I would like to offer an idea for companies who need to manage parking lots or have a private lot for your office.

With a wide angle camera, mounted high on a light post (or on top of the office building) you can send the "BIRDS EYE VIEW" of the lot to a TV near the entrance of the lot.  This give the person who is arrive a quick view of where the empty spots are located.  Also, this give the impression that the lot is better monitored from a security point of view.

It works better with concrete lots then asphalt because the white background gives a better contrast.

I have had an x-10 for over 10 years now with only a few false alarms.  Very Dependable.  I have all four dial number in the system,  the first and third are my cell phone recently purchased and the other two ring my daughter in law/s home which is usually monitor 24/7.    On my way to my wife's hair appointment,  my cell phone goes off.   Not knowing who it might be since really no one knows the number, I listened to my message that there was an intruder.  Sure enough, when I listenen in with the zero on the cell, I heard intruders counting down from five to one, and then dead silence.  I scurried home , which was 10 minutes away, and found the rear door broken, and some russled drawers in the bed room, and papers all over my computer room    The alarm scared them and they were in a hurry to get out.  Nothing at all was taken thanks for the alarm on the x-10 console.  I got the police involved, but it took them over an hour to get there.  Thanks for the x-10, or I may have had all my computer equipment, plus expensive hi fi and other expensive items still in tack.    I have one window alarm that I never installed, and now since the whole house was wired when built, I am going to series all the windows and set up the only sensor so that if any window dowstairs is opened the alarm will sound.

I have my x-10 system working with my existing hard wired alarm system!  I use the alarm system to assist in controlling lighting so the wife can come home to a brightly lit house.  This is done using the X-10 light switches, socket rocket lamp modules, standard lamp modules, and I control it all with "My House" and her x10 key fob.  If I do not have it set on a timer to turn on lights at set times, she can press the lights on function on the fob and turn it all on nice and bright.  We live a little out of the way so this makes her feel a lot more comfortable when she comes home in the dark (boo).  I also use a camera connected through the X-10 motion sensor to keep an eye on my dog walker.  My wife thought the dog walker was mistreating the dog, so I hooked up the camera and VCR to the motion sensor, routed the power through a lamp module and control it all with the transceiver so when the door opens (the dog walker uses only the front door), the camera and VCR kick on and record her time in the house.  Pretty slick!  Anyway, I keep my wife happy so she can come and go from a well lit house, the dog safe and spouse happy that she can "spy" on the dog walker, and me happy as I get to play with and think of new ways to use my X-10 gear.   Right now I am thinking of how to hook up my new "Sentinel" camera system!

X-10 rocks, keep the good stuff coming!

I purchased an XCam2 Wireless Color camera with the motion sensor and video receiver to monitor my yard. Each Christmas. some punk kids run around vandalizing the Christmas decorations in my neighborhood. This year I'll be ready to catch them when they enter my yard. I also plan on buying more X10 controls to turn on all my Christmas lights and decorations simultaneously rather than me run throughout the house turn them on individually.

I use Four wireless, camera at the front and back door and pool area, drive way and on the blind side of my home. The  cameras send video to my computer  so I can always see who is visiting wanted or not. if I am away , I have it set up so it records video of the cameras to my VCR, and also have it send me an email to my home and forwarded to my cell phone, when there is motion detected by my motion sensors, for instantviewing.

I have a home built in 1921. I use X10 through out my home but my lastest project involved my HVAC system. When a forced air heating system was installed only 2 heat ducts where run upstairs to heat 4 rooms. Each duct comes up between a common wall for 2 rooms.

I have a living room that's an ice box in the summer and an oven in the winter. I installed in-line duct booster fans and motorized dampers in my heat ducts. Each 110 volt booster fan is controlled by a SR227 X10 outlet. The 120 volt fan plugs into the X10 controlled upper half of the outlet. In the always on lower half of the outlet I have plugged in an AM486 appliance module. The 24 volt AC transformer that supplies the power dampers plugs into the appliance module. Using Active Home Pro with Smart Macros I control the outlets and appliance modules. I have created a series of macros triggered by timers that match our living habits and X10 controls all the fans and dampers. Unused rooms have the dampers closed and booster fans off while occupied rooms are open and fans blowing. Since installing the fans and power dampers X10 has controlled the zones that I have set up making the rooms much more comfortable. Down the road I have plans to install X10 control to bring in outside fresh air into the system.

About three or four years ago, I built a home theater. X10 was an affordable solution to a WOW-factor. The IR controller allows me to control my lights when I start and stop the movie. The video senders, allow me to RE-broadcast the movie to TVs upstairs.

I added cameras, so I could see my driveway from my office. More X10 lighting, modules, switches, floodlights... more cameras.

I came to the X10 forum looking for new ideas. Here I found Active Home Pro.... and BVC. I spent some time trying different setups to get my voice to Bill's Voice Commander. I finally found "baby Monitors"... and things haven't been the same since. By-the-way, X10 cameras with microphones can work just as well.

I created an X10 - BVC talking clock using macros in AHP.

I truly have a home that even the "Jetson's" would find "modern". I am one of X10's biggest fans!

I created a NEW X10 video.... you can view it at YouTube.

Some of the X10 products I use:

Lamp Modules (LM465)

SocketRocket (LM15A)

Appliance Modules (AM486)

Remote Chime (SC546A)

Decorator Dimmer Switch (WS12A)

Slimline stick-on Switch (SS13A)

PowerFlash module (PF284)

XCam2 Color Video Camera  (XX11A)

Xcam color (wired) cam

Nightwatch cam

Outdoor Floodlight Motion Detector (PR511)

IR Mini Controller (IR543)

Active Home Pro (CM15A)

Monitor Plus Console - (DC821)

Palmpad remotes

Keyflob remote

and MORE

See my birdhouse Cam in the YouTube movie.

Hi, for as long as i can remember, we have used the home automation system.  I remember my dad first getting the system for the house I lived in as a kid, we were just amazed at the thought of standing in one room and turning on and off the lights in the next room.   When my wife and I bought our home thirteen years ago, I couldn't wait to start adding the automated light system to our house.  Every one on my wife's side of the family was shocked when they came over to our house and noticed that I didn't leave my chair to turn on the lights in the other rooms and even the outside yard lights and porch lights.  Just a few months ago, the park that out manufactured home was in was closed.  When this happened, the park became a gang hideout.  I purchased the night vision camera pack and put up cameras to protect the house when we were gone.  We went on vacation, and while we were gone, i used my laptop and the internet along with AHP to watch our house.  We were at the beach and could still turn on and off the lights and look around the inside and outside of our house.  In our new place, I have set up the cameras to watch the driveway, the bird feeder out back, the kids room and i have about three quarters of the house lighting on the automated system.  I plan to soon upgrade to the color cameras and to make a bird feeder camera that has a color camera inside a bird house so the kids and i can watch the birds lay eggs and have them hatch.. we can wait...  we love our system and would not give it up for anything..  thanks X10..
