Is this a P0RN site?
« on: December 19, 2008, 11:12:19 PM »

I don't know... is it really necessary for X-10 to basically have this new level of sex in all their ad's?   I would never send my kid there now to look around for cool gadgets.  Anyone else?

I talked about X10 and Home Automation to friends and family for years. But lately when talking about HA... I say SmartHome... it's very sad. But I just don't want to be associated with "girly pictures".

I'm far from a prude but there is a decency limit. If it gets any worse, they'll need to rename it the XXX10 site.
As I posted elsewhere, I might check out the ad but I will never  make home automation purchases based on a scantly clad model. Furthermore if I can find the same price elsewhere, I'll go there to buy my automation items.

I tend to buy from Automated Outlet http://www.automatedoutlet.com/home.php rather than X10.com, no "porn" and the prices are always lower than X10's.

You know.... it's OK to shop anywhere you'd like. But the best deals are at the X10.com Site. I keep an eye on the deals. I had read about this here at the forum... however I don't remember you wrote this. But if you watch the deals... and calculate the per piece cost for items... you can then compare the prices else where. Not only will X10's deals be cheaper... but you'll get free shipping to boot.

Of course... using the "shop by deals" method you will end up with a nice bunch of extra stuff (most of us store that in a plastic storage box of some sort). But even some of the stuff I thought I'd never use... I've found uses for. Meanwhile... I think I average about $5 per piece for my X10 addiction (and NO shipping fees).

Yes.  This is ridiculous.  It is looking more like porn site and less like a respectable business.  I don't mean to put the models out of business, but there is no coloration between a half naked woman and security products, unless you're spying on her illegally (which is illegal).  The photos make no since for selling the products.  I like the products, but I'm canceling my subscription with X-10.  Recently, I was checking my email and one of my co-workers at a glance thought it was porn.  I had to explain it was an email for security products.  Long before this incident, I wanted to contact X-10 about the photos, but never got around to it.  Please join me in flooding X-10 with messages to remove distasteful photos and consider advertising the product, not the woman.

Ethicschk,

I agree, I dare not open an X10 email, or the web site at work.

There is NO way to even explain the pictures, let along to try and justify their use if my employer would see the X10 trollups. I would be yanked in HR in about 10 seconds.

At first I joked that the X10 Marketing Director was still in high school. But now I think X10 top management; either has some serious character issues or are purposefully trying to accelerate the demise of X10.

..This is ridiculous. .......... at a glance thought it was porn.

At a glance... IT IS PORN.

Your right. We need to do something! I guess for me.. I need to do some serious soul searching. I am not a prude by any means. However I DO NOT approve of portraying women [minorities, children, animals, or even bald old white men.. for that matter) negatively... without reason. It's not that the pictures are BAD... it is that the use of those pictures with this type of product line is wrong. X10's use of those photos are insensitive. The ads are demeaning to women in general.

X10 I am respectfully asking you to discontinue your use of risque photos in your ads.

X10.com has always used the most immature, childish advertising schemes available, and people (myself included) have complained for years.  I do have to say that the most recent advertising really has crossed the line.  They don't even bother to show products anymore, just barely dressed women.  The irony is that I've seen advertising for adult product sites that show far less skin that this supposed electronics retailer.

That being said, X10.com has never been responsive to customer complaints about it's advertising practices, as it's obviously only gotten worse over time.  So, since they only care about their bottom line, there are two ways individuals can respond:

  • Don't buy products from X10.com
  • Report X10.com as a site containing pornography to watchdog sites that provide content filtering, like OpenDNS.org, Net Nanny, etc.  Many homes/businesses utilize services such as these which can automatically block access to inappropriate sites.  Perhaps if X10.com finds themselves on the wrong side of too many internet filters, they'll need to rethink their advertising strategy.

No. I intend to take the moral high ground. I emailed X10 today... and I will also call.. we all should. Contray to your belief that X10 doesn't listen... I am not completely convinced.

I have used [and also contribute to] X10's forum to my benefit... and X10's deals are the best I have found. Although the X10 Site has become prono-ish... I don't think they are reportable.... yet.

I will complain... by email, by phone, and I might even just write an old fashioned letter.

At the bottom of the x10.com site is a comment section that I have used before to ask them to loose the smut marketing.
The next time I go there it's worse as if they enjoy irritating me.

Why I autta...
