There has always been a hole beneath the label on the back of the RR501.

None on my RR501s have holes, although they are circa 1980s. But being on the back, it is pretty hard to jam a paper clip in the hole and get 'cuted.
I still don't see UL listing a device that has an open hole to the PC board which has full line voltage present on it.

I've never seen one w/o the hole but mine are all from the '90s and later. It's over one of the tunable cans - IIRC, in the RF section.

Have an extra you would sell or trade for a later one? I'd like one of the old ones with the original design which had a rectangular metal cover over the RF section. I want to see whether my RR5x5^TM daughterboard will work with them. You can see a picture here...

Sure. Will trade. I am not using it right now, but I am working in another State and only get home every couple of weeks. PM me your address and I will send it next time I get home. You can send the trade after I get this one to you.

the on and off button is hidden uder a little x10 sticker logo.

If the button is under a sticker.
It is just filling the hole in the case. So you can't do something dumb and stick a piece of metal into it and let the magic smoke come out.   
It has no internal relay for On and Off functions.
It is bypassed and is always On.

The older ones with an internal appliance style switch. The local On Off push button was not covered by a sticker and actually turned the thing On and Off.
