My current cable is about 6 feet long.  When I set things up a ear ago I had it in a different location so wanted a longer cable.  Now I only need about a foot.  But I can't recall the specifics on what I need for the connections - is it a USB A to B like this one?

Thanks.  The one you linked was 16feet, but using the description:
USB 2.0 A-Male to B-Male Cable

I found one that's 1.5 feet so going with that.

From the Pi Zero information sheets.
The Pi Zero uses a Micro AB for OTG USB connector. Not a standard A to B cable.

I used one like this - available in various lengths and straight, left or right angle. No OTG adapter required.

That one looks like the one I was using. Micro USB to USB B.
I didn't remember where I got it but you jogged my memory.

That's simular to what I originally had just not a micro end so I needed a adaptor.
For my PI Inside Cm15 I just soldered the Cm15 connections to the Pi test pads. (no external wire hanging off the USB port)

Follow up question: Aside from the longer cable I have now just lying on the floor and getting in the way, would their be a response time improvement with a shorter cable - say 1.5 feet vs 6 feet?

Whoops. Sorry man. They are right. You have the mini and the one Brobin suggested would be right.

I forgot I use the RPi 3.

Only because I didn't want my stuff on WiFi. I use the Ethernet port connected to my switch and then placed the RPi inside the rack enclosure. Works great!

It should be mentioned... (besides the fact that it only takes 2ns for bits to travel the length of 15 feet of USB) that a Nano Second... measured as the distance it takes light to travel... is 8 1/4 inches. In other words the delay involved between 1.5 feet and 6 feet would be roughly the time it takes for light to travel about 1 foot.

There would be more difference in signal loss than transmission time.  If you have high quality cables, anything less than ~6' will work fine.  If you have very long cables, you may need some kind of a signal booster like this:

I can't find a reference to the maximum cable length, but this post quotes a page that is long dead and indicates 16' is the max length for full speed.

Lacking the actual source document, I can't confirm if this is for USB 2 or 3.  But, since the answer was given in 2009 and USB 3 was introduced in 2008, I'd assume that the length limitation is still valid.  Here's more info if you want more background:

Anytime you look at NS speeds... unless you're referring to specifics in the confines of a laboratory... it's a moot point. Earth-bound humans have limited reference to a NS.
