TTA's "Community" Chat Volunteers

Have any  of the VOLUNTEERS been logging into a Computers & Internet -> Electronics:X CHAT ROOM on a regular basis and WAITING for NEWBIEs to login and ask questions?

I've gone into them from time to time but you never know which rooms will be there or which one to be in. I wonder if someone tried to contact whoever at Yahoo if they would create an Automation X10 room? If we tell them that we have 6000 plus members on the board and invite them to take a look at the boards and also tell them we are trying to promote using Yahoo that maybe they would create a room for us. Perhaps the linguistic skills of TTA could sway them into creating one.

Why don't each of us using Yahoo add our Yahoo IDs under our avatars!

Users will see this in any thread you have posted to!

Newbies aren't likely to read this thread but will read the caption under your avatar especially if you give useful info!

Note: even thought the forum doesn't always display me as on Yahoo
 I usualy am if logged on here!

Users will see this in any thread you have posted to!

Some random comments / thoughts:

• SMF already displays (under your avatar):
   - Your YIM (Yahoo! Instant Messenger ID) when you're logged OFF
   - A SMILIE FACE ( ) when you're logged ON
  .
• Yahoo! ID and/or YIM *STILL* don't convey the fact that we have CHAT ROOM readily available.
  
• IMHO, separating your X10 Community ID from the X10 suffix with an '_' makes it *MUCH* easier to read your basic / root ID.
  .
• Come up with a way to get more folks involved in the "Community" (as opposed to the Transients that just pop in to ask a question and sometimes never even return to read the answer... ).

IMHO, many NEWBIEs "THINK" they're talking to X10 Corp when they logon here to COMPLAIN / SCREAM / YELL.    *IF* we *STOP* answering *EVERY* question, just maybe some of them will start to READ and follow our suggestions / requests...   [I have. ]

Let me tell you - if someone is SO *DIM* that they cannot associate a SPECIFIC Yahoo! CHAT ROOM NUMBER with one of our POSTED YIMs, well, personally, I don't think that I want to even ATTEMPT to explain the intracacies of getting semi-reliable X10 operation to them!

this little Icon obviously means your logged on to yahoo it doesn't mean your on the chat
and this only works if you have "allow yahoo web site to show when I'm online" checked in the preferences!

I sat in and refreshed the "who's online screen"while chatting with KDR last night many Guests were reading some very helpful posts these may become newbies so saying that newbies don't spend any time isn't entirely true!
Some were even reading this thread which shocked me!

Besides seeing GUESTS reading the current / newer "Helpful" posts / FAQs / STICKYs, I also see them checking certain regular contributor's Profiles.   ?MAYBE? all this SOAPBOX COMPLAINING of mine is beginning to "bear fruit"? I've read several NEWBIE posts stating "I've searched, but couldn't find..." - what we need to do now is TEACH them the difference between SEARCH and ADVANCED SEARCH.

I don't want to take the chance that opening up YIM on my Win98SE P266 laptop will CRASH everything, but... if you look, there's a option / preference / setting in there to *ONLY* display members of your "Address Book" (not sure of the name, but, you'll know it when you see it). That way,

*SEVERAL* different groups can carry on INDIVIDUAL CONFERENCES
in the *SAME* room
without interfering with one another.

The Idea for standard naming for Volunteers is a very good Idea as it lets newbies find us quickly and that is the Idea behind the chat!

Isn't it?

We've started to get questions in chat which Bill and myself were able to help with !
If we had the option you suggest enabled we wouldn't have been able to help!
The only Way is to have a room named "HomeAutomation"
Users can help with this!

A few of us have started to add the room we're in after our IDs as a dispaly message eg : In Electronics:8
I'm always looking at ways to speed things up!
I'm sure we'll still get as Puck calls them the X's spaming but they can be blocked by simply clicking on them and ignoring them!
Last nights Chat was fun as well as helpful!
Since I work shifts I can't be on every night but I 'm on during the day when not during the night thus the random in my info!

Ok here is the reply from YAHOO regarding my question if they want every one to request the room

words, if we get a lot of requests for a specific room, or if we see a
User Created room that is especially popular, we might create a Yahoo!
Room to meet the demand.

If a group of you is interested in seeing us create a specific room,
your best bet is for each of you to fill out the feedback form at the

Select the "Comments or Concerns" subject, let us know which room you
are interested in, and we'll tally your requests.

I know asking everyone to fillout the online form is like talking to a wall!
But if you feel that this would even be remotely worth while Go For it GANG! lets see if they're faster at getting a chat room up that X10 is at fixing theirs!

Lets get that HomeAutomation room!
