I just found a RFID Kit at ThinkGeek. I though it could be useful for anyone looking for an RFID solution.

I was thinking of automated identity recognition. To maybe unlock doors, turn off the alarm system, and/or run welcome routines.

More and more... I use remotes less and less. I know it's not.. just me. I like the idea of controlling.... by giving away the control. The more control I can turn over to the Home Automation Computer... the better.

I have a kit from Parallax that I have been playing with. I believe they use them in some of their Basic Stamp projects.

There are definite possibilities there...

Here is a Canadian source that sells RFID kits: CanaKit
Their reader has a relay output that could easily interface to X10.

RFID Modules would be a great addition to the X10 Line up...

X10 could make a standard looking module that has the house and unit code as normal, but instead of receiving on that code, it would send that code when an RFID Tag was within range of it, and send an off code when the tag left the area, like the motion sensors act in that sense...

and to get fancy, they could have the RFID tags be one for each house code, or just in sets of 4 like the cameras that way AHP users could take things further and have certain events happen for certain tags.

Or..... if a user has an idea for using the RFID tags (or implants) some of the kits could easily be connected to "hacked remotes" or simple powerflash modules. Home Automation is still... and may always be a niche market. But easy to do modifications (and user created software) is what allows us to expand into new areas.

Sharing the new ideas here at the forums.... just makes it easier and better for everyone.

Anything ever come of this?

I think it would be more efficient to use RFID for occupancy sensing than bluetooth on  your cell phones (because it sucks the life out of it)


I've also see the RFID kit from parallax but have never played with it. However I am confident I could tie it into HA.

I played around with the Smarthome Insteon RFID Kit. Well sort of.
I had extra I/OLincs so I only bought the reader, relay board and wall wart.
I got it working after finding out the instructions where wrong on how to wire it.
Published my corrections over on the Smarthome site and guess what. Months later the instructions are still incorrect.  :(
Technically the relay board could trigger anything with a dry contact input. Doesn't have to be an Insteon I/OLinc.

I have also have one of the Parallax RFID reader kits and have dumped the serial data to a two line LCD display.

I don't think anyone has jumped on this (at this forum) yet. I keep seeing more and more RFID devices and readers online as well. I am sure that RFID could be a usefull part of Home Automation. I wouldn't even mind an implant.. as say... a digital key to unlock the door. But there are also long range RFID [powered] tags that could be used for car counting.

I really LIKE the idea of a [grain of rice sized] implant... that would function as a key. Eliminating the burden of carrying keys... and the repetitive task of using them... is GOOD Home Automation (IMHO). The cards attached to a key chain are nice too.
